Teach simple sentence structure. Give the user a new icon for “ I want” and a “sentence strip” on which a sequence of pictures can adhere (see photo). Teach the user to place “I want” and a picture of the requested item on the sentence strip, and then hand the entire strip to the CP. Once this new skill is acquired, the CP helps the user touch each picture as the CP says the corresponding word. This is an exciting time because some users begin to speak as this strategy is introduced. If speech occurs, the CP should provide enthusiastic praise. If the user doesn’t speak, give encouragement but don’t try to force the user to speak. It’s much more effective to create frequent opportunities for speech and reinforce any approximations of speech as they occur
