Teach discrimination. Although some children carefully select distinct pictures in distinct situations without direct training, most users need to be taught to discriminate between pictures. One strategy is to have the user begin choosing between items that are highly reinforcing and items that are not reinforcing (e.g., a cookie and a sock). If the user selects the cookie picture, give some of the cookie. However, if the user gives the sock picture, then you know a mistake or error has occurred and an error correction strategy would be used. After the user has mastered such easy discriminations, make the choices involve equally reinforcing items
