Teach attributes. Identify the attributes of the most powerful reinforcers that are likely to be most appealing to the child. If a big cookie is likely to be preferred over a small cookie, teach the user to request, “ I want big cookie.” A child who consistently picks out all the red blocks from a pile of blocks of different colors can be taught to request, “ I want red block.” Taking advantage of a child’s current interests will be more motivating and effective than asking the child to “Point to the big cup” or “Give me the red spoon.”
