Task:

Submit a
1200 word paper
(approx. 150-200 words per case study) using information from reliable sources. This task is to be submitted into
Turnitin
using the link provided in Blackboard and will be assessed using the rubric attached above.

You will need to address all of the case study scenarios below:

1. John lacerates his radial artery while cutting a bagel. He loses approximately one-fourth of his blood volume before arriving at the hospital. What physiological responses do you expect in response to this blood loss?

2. Mr. Jones is a 44-year-old man admitted to the hospital after inhalation of smoke in a house fire. His physician tells him that he has reduced compliance and high alveolar surface tension and Mr. Jones wants to know what this means based on his situation. What would you tell him?

3. Explain the relationship between Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroglobulin (TG), triiodothyronine (T3), and tetraiodothyronine (T4).

4. Isaac is a 32-year-old healthy adult. Describe how he maintains normal bone integrity.

5. Dan is a 20-year-old with plaque psoriasis. He reports that his father also had severe plaque psoriasis throughout his life. Dan wants to know what this is, what occurs, and an explanation of two treatments that may assist in making it less noticeable to others who do not understand the disease. What would you tell him?

6. Ms. Evans is diagnosed with a complete spinal cord injury at C5 after a motor vehicle crash. You are assigned to care for her. Explain the physiological significance of the injury, and based on your understanding of spinal cord injuries, explain three signs or symptoms that you anticipate.

Formatting:

Your work should include the following:

  • Descriptive title

  • Subheadings to identify each case scenario

  • Double-spacing throughout

  • References (both in-text and end-text)

  • DoNOTchange the order of the case study scenarios

References:

You need to provide in-text references (cited within the text) and end-text references (presented as a list at the end of the document). Your references should consider the following:

  • At least 5 sources that are current (within 5 years)

  • Sources must be peer-reviewed and academic (see‘SCN1111 Guidelines for Presenting Assignments’for examples of non-academic sources)

  • Direct quotes are not allowed. All information must be paraphrased (marks cannot be awarded for high similarity)

  • REFERENCE APA 7th

Scenario 1
Radial Artery
Radial artery is one of the major arteries in human forearm. When the palm of hand is pointing upwards, it could be easily located close to the surface of underside of forearm. Radial artery is responsible for the supply of oxygenated blood to arms from the lungs. Cutting of radial artery does causes enormous amount of blood loss because it carries higher blood pressure and it makes clotting difficult (Gaudino et al., 2018). John is reported to have lost more than one-fourth of his blood volume before arriving to the hospital. Blood loss between 15% and 40% of the total blood volume would lead to lowering of mean atrial and pulse pressure. Along with this, John’s heart rate is expected to increase.
Blood Loss Symptoms
In response to this enormous blood loss, body further compensates by constricting blood vessels in the limbs as well as, extremities. This allows blood pressure to fall and reduction in blood flow. It would be essential to consider that the heart would be pumping less blood; therefore, skin may be cool to touch and pale in color (O’Dougherty, Fulkerson, Kern, Haldar & Calhoun, 2019). Likewise, John is expected to feel fatigue and drowsy because of lack of oxygen and blood supply towards brain and if bleeding not controlled, body could also undergo partial paralysis.
Scenario 2
Explanation of Lung Compliance
Mr. Jones being a nonprofessional to the medical terms, it would be essential to present his medical condition through much simpler terms. Therefore, in order to explain Mr. Jones, lungs could be compared with balloons where compliance can indicate elasticity of balloons. Therefore, upon inhalation lungs inflate and upon exhalation deflation of lungs occur. Schu et al. (2019) suggested that in order to maintain continuous rhythm between inhalation and exhalation, lungs are required to maintain their flexibility also called compliance. Decrease in compliance indicates a stiff lung and it can be compared with a thicker balloon, which is hard to inflate.
Explanation of Higher Alveolar Surface Tension
Likewise, alveoli are like small sacs where exchange of gases occurs. Normal pressure of alveoli is required to keep them inflated; however, increased pressure leads to collapse of those alveoli. Due to smoke, lung compliance or flexibility has decreased and it has become stiff while alveoli have collapsed. As a result, he would be facing difficulty in breathing and he might feel fatigue due to lack of oxygen.
