Each student will nominate a UNESCO cultural world heritage site (outside of Australia) - which serves as a tourist destination. The nominated UNESCO cultural heritage is
Borobudur Temple in Indonesia.


Students will conduct their own research and present, in a scholarly manner, their findings in a video presentation.


The presentation is expected to include:


· A scholarly analysis of ownership, management structure, stakeholders and marketing strategy


· A profile of the site’s significance; cultural heritage management approach and applied conservation and sustainability principles


· The current stage of relationship between heritage and tourism management at the chosen site


· An analysis of visitation numbers and types of cultural tourists attracted to the site


· A discussion on the tangible and/or intangible cultural heritage values of the site


· A complete heritage asset audit of their chosen site and an interpretation of the outcome


· A proposed set of recommendations in response to any shortcomings and/or identification of management opportunities identified in their research


· References: a minimum of four (4) academic references and three (3) additional resources



Assessment Criteria


1. Analyse in depth management of cultural heritage sites and its tourism development.


2. Investigate the problems occurring at a specific cultural-heritage location and recommend logical and rational solutions to obtain sustainable results


3. Critically analyse tourism visitation of a cultural heritage site


4. Analyse the cultural visitor profiles and the marketing activities used to attracting this type of tourist


5. Generate recommendations regarding sustainable development of tourism at a heritage site


6. Propose a set of recommendations in response to any shortcomings and/or management opportunities identified in research


7. Analyse the current conservation and sustainability concepts and strategies


8. Present ideas in oral and written format to diverse audiences

Introduction
    The glorious Borobudur Temple is situated on the island called Java in Indonesia. It is the biggest Buddhist monument in the world. This ancient site is broadly considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The temple is located magnificently on the top of hills overseeing lavish green meadows and aloof hills. This assessment further focuses on the detailed description of Borobudur Temple, which is a UNESCO cultural heritage site and serves as a tourist destination.
A Scholarly Analysis of Borobudur Temple
    Borobudur Temple was built by the Cailendra dynasty in the 8th century. It is assumed that it has been resultant from the Sanskrit words “Vihara Buddha Uhr” which is the Buddhist Monastery on the hill. Javanese Buddhist architecture is the design followed by the temple. This is the combination of both Buddhist perception of achieving Nirvana and Indonesian native alternative of ancestor worship. India’s influence is reflected on this region due to the demonstration of Gupta’s art, however enough native components and prospects are assimilated that makes Borobudur Temple distinctively Indonesian. The place is for Buddhist pilgrimage as temple is a shrine to the Buddha.
    In 1814, world knowledge of its survival was ignited by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and then by British leader of Java. Instinctive Indonesians recommended him of its site. Since then Borobudur Temple has been conserved through numerous restorations. Among several restorations, UNESCO and the Indonesian government between the period 1975 and 1982 carried out the largest, then it was listed in world heritage site of UNESCO (Murwanto, Gunnell, Suharsono, Sutikno & Lavigne, 2004).
Management Structure
    The management of structure is implemented under Indonesian Law No. 11/2010 about Cultural Heritage and its adjoining cultural land. It is performed under the Spatial Management Plan and a National Strategic Area and by the Ministry of Public Works in agreement with the Law about Spatial Management No. 26/2007 and Government Regulation No. 26/2008. National Spatial Planning and will be applied in future by one more presidential instruction concerning the Management for the Borobudur National Strategic Area which is still being conscripted by the Ministry of Public Works (UNESCO, 2021).
