Task One: Summarise the information gathered about each of your four (4) focus children (40 marks)
National Quality Standard Element 1.2.1 states, ‘each child’s learning is assessed as part of an ongoing cycle of planning, documenting and evaluation’
1. Summarise the information collected in Program Cluster On the Job Assessment 3 to identify each of your children’s strengths, interests, emerging skills and relationships and their progress working towards the learning outcomes. You may use the Learning and Development Summary, included with this assessment or a format used by the service.
You will submit four (4) Learning and Development Summaries in total, one for each focus child. (25 marks)
2. Write up ten (10) planning suggestions for the group of children; include a range of play experiences, learning centres, routines and transitions.
Please note these can be as brief as those provided in the example. (15 marks)
Planning suggestions must:
• Build on individual children’s strengths and emerging skills to support their progress to the Learning Framework Outcomes
• Promote children’s sense of belonging and provide children with opportunity to share personal interests with each other and engage in an in-depth investigation
• Provide opportunity for children to engage in a range of experiences that include:
o Science, mathematics and technology experiences using open ended materials for children to sort, order, categorise and compare and opportunity for concept development
o Language and literacy play; opportunity to listen and respond to language
Support the children to develop relationships – to promote a sense of community and opportunity to investigate issues of fairness relevant to their lives and communities
Task Two: Collaborate with others to plan the curriculum (60 marks)
1. Arrange a planning meeting with your Work place Supervisor and where possible room staff. Take your planning ideas from the previous task and your suggestions for adding to and modifying the environment (from On the Job Assessment 3 Task 1) to the meeting and in collaboration plan a curriculum for five (5) days. Ensure that the curriculum provides opportunity for continuity of learning and builds on children’s interests, skills, knowledge and relationships over the five (5) days.
You will not be expected to plan the whole curriculum for the five (5) days but you will need to demonstrate that you have contributed to planning and implementing the curriculum for the 5 days.
2. Complete your preferred curriculum planning format. You may use a format that you have designed or the format that the service uses. You may need to adapt the service format to include all of the required information listed below. (60 marks)
The Curriculum Planning Format needs to include:
• A plan of the indoor and outdoor environments (provide a simple plan of both, identify materials and equipment that will be provided - clearly indicate the areas that you have personally planned and set up) (2 marks)
o the learning environment will encourage interactions between children, group discussions and collaboration (5 marks)
o ensure a literacy rich environment that includes appreciation of home languages as well as Standard Australian English and opportunity to experiment with images and print. (3 marks)
• All planned experiences and learning centres, routines and transitions. Indicate which plans are your own and which are contributions from other educators. The learner should use a variety of planning tools to record experiences; including ongoing projects, learning centres, curriculum webs and experience plans. Ensure sufficient information is included in your planning i.e. focus child/children, the location, learning opportunities, materials and equipment required, planned teaching strategies and evaluation:
o at least two (2) learning centres/play environments to be set up, evaluated and monitored over the five days (you may choose two of the following; science, mathematics, concept development, language or literacy to focus on for these learning centres) (10 marks)
o at least 6 experiences based on the information gathered about your focus children and group (these should be a variety of types of play, large and small group play and provide opportunity for children to investigate their ideas).(10 marks)
o transitions and routines - routines and transitions offer opportunity for learning and provide flow to the program (5 marks)
• Your role and the roles and responsibilities of other educators, (who will manage other tasks). Your own role may include that of communicating with others, organising materials and equipment and setting up of environment, using teachable moments and international teaching; identifying appropriate teaching strategies to promote participation and engagement in learning. You will need to provide clear instruction to other educators: e.g when and what to set up, how you want them to facilitate or assess or evaluate an experience. (10 marks)
• Assessment of children’s learning and how they are progressing towards Learning Outcome. (5 marks)
• A daily evaluation of the curriculum
o the children’s participation and response to the curriculum
o feedback from others, including staff, families and other children
o follow- up experiences to further enhance the child’s development and interests
o relevant modifications and adaptations
o your own performance When evaluating your facilitation skills and the curriculum you may wish to use criteria from Task 3.
(10 marks)
Task Three: Implement your curriculum for five (5) days.
When implementing your program across the (5) five day period you will need to:
• Implement the curriculum in a flexible manner allowing for children to lead their play, make choices and for their interests to evolve.
• Be organised and plan ahead making sure all materials and resources are available in advance
• Communicate with the team and ensure ongoing communication with your Workplace Supervisor and the families, how will you make the families aware of the curriculum you have planned and how it is evolving over the week?
• Consider the impact the learning environment has on children’s learning and any organisational constraints that may affect your selection and implementation of experiences for children.
• Ensure that all involved are aware of their roles and responsibilities
• Ensure your curriculum reflects diversity, supports children’s identities and reflects and integrates inclusive practice, including cultural diversity.
• Evaluate daily; modify and adapt the curriculum based on these evaluations. Document your evaluation on your curriculum format (see Task 2 for details).
• Work within the organisational standards, policies and procedures of the service.
NB: There are no marks allocated for Task Three. Evidence for this task is implicit within your response to Task Two. Your assessor and/or video evidence will also assess your facilitation skills for this task.
