QCD310 Case Study Assessment 2 23CTP2 QCD310 | Assessment 2 | Case study Helen is a 45-year-old female who was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus two months ago. Subsequently, she was prescribed oral medication to control her blood glucose level. She is a full- time library technician who is raising two children on her own. As part of her initial diabetes management routine, Helen has been attending diabetes education sessions once a week. These sessions include information about diabetes as well as recommendations for diet, exercise and prescribed medication. Now, in a regular scheduled appointment, Helen tells the health professional at the Diabetes Clinic that she has not been following her recommended dietary requirements (as per the Australian Dietary Guidelines) regarding foods with a high sugar level which she says she “really likes”. Helen also says very firmly that she is extremely “time poor” and admits that she relies on Uber Eats to bring her takeaway meals; and processed foods including oven fries and frozen foods because these suit her busy lifestyle. Helen then becomes agitated, saying that she is sick of hearing media reports, which constantly state that “everything is bad for us” and says she finds these messages very confusing. In addition, Helen says that, as a single mother, she has no time to exercise. She becomes increasingly agitated and upset, raises her voice with the health professional, and refuses to sit down or maintain eye contact, claiming that no one understands how difficult her life is. Further assessment reveals that Helen’s blood glucose level is higher than the recommended level. The health professional realises that a discussion with Helen needs to take place in an appropriate manner in order to discuss this issue. Question: What communication skill can the healthcare professional use in their discussion with Helen? Choose one skill covered between weeks 3 to 9. Discuss why this skill is important to the healthcare profession and how this skill can be practically applied to Helen’s case. QCD310 Case Study Assessment 2 23CTP2 Write a 1200 word response to this case study/scenario, answering the questions above. Introduction
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common, challenging, and severely debilitating chronic health disease. Elevated blood glucose levels brought on by insulin resistance and insufficient insulin synthesis are its defining characteristics. T2DM is a serious public health issue in Australia that affects millions of people and presents significant healthcare concerns. The purpose of this introduction is to set the stage for a discussion of the case study concerning Helen, a 45-year-old woman who was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, by providing an overview of the prevalence, causes, risk factors, and management of T2DM on a worldwide and Australian scale.
Prevalence Worldwide and in Australia
Over 460 million individuals will be affected by T2DM globally in 2021, and forecasts show that this number will continue to climb (Galicia-Garcia et al., 2020). T2DM is a common problem in Australia, where 1.2 million people have been diagnosed with it and a further 2 million are at risk because they have prediabetes. These numbers are projected to increase, putting a significant strain on the healthcare system and people's personal life.
Causes and Risk Factors
T2DM formation involves several factors. It develops when the pancreas fails to generate enough insulin to overcome the body's resistance to the hormone insulin, which is in charge of controlling blood glucose levels. Obesity, leading a sedentary lifestyle, heredity, and age are significant risk factors. Notably, T2DM affects Indigenous Australians more severely than the general population, with greater prevalence rates, earlier onset, and more severe consequences. This health inequality highlights the necessity for patient-centered, culturally sensitive treatment.
Management of T2DM
A multimodal strategy is required for the effective management of T2DM, including dietary changes, medication, and education (Oguntibeju, 2019). Maintaining a good diet, getting regular exercise, controlling stress, and reaching and maintaining a healthy weight are all examples of lifestyle modifications. When lifestyle changes alone are insufficient, a doctor will prescribe medication, such as oral hypoglycemic medications or insulin. Education on diabetes is a crucial component because it equips people with the knowledge and abilities they need to properly manage their illness on their own.
Case Study Overview
Now, concentrating on the case study, we meet Helen, a 45-year-old single mother who works full-time as a library technician and was recently identified as having T2DM. The difficulties experienced by many people in Australia who have T2DM are reflected in Helen's circumstances. She is balancing a stressful work, parenting two kids on her own, and finding it difficult to follow suggested...
