Language is not static, it evolves overtime. We have
new words entering our dictionaries every year. While language in itself changes, something influences this change. Historically, it would have been interaction with new communities, influence through mixing of races and so on. Today, it is more about evolution of technology. As a result, we have words like ‘selfie’, ‘googling a word’, ‘tweeting’ becoming increasingly common.
According to me, social media has influenced language greatly. In addition to making English a universal language, CMC’s have emerged in the form of emojjis and emoticons and are being used to convey meanings and emotions to people across borders (Patterson & Trabaldo, 2006).
