Specific
When setting a SMART goal, it is important to ensure that it is specific, meaning that it is clear and well-defined. A specific goal should answer the questions: What do I want to achieve? Why is it important? Who is involved? Where will it take place? When will it be accomplished?
For my upcoming NUR344 PEP, my specific goal is to demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, including patients and their families. This goal is specific because it outlines what I want to achieve - effective communication and collaboration with the healthcare team, including patients and their families. It also explains why this is important - it is crucial in delivering safe and quality patient care. The goal involves various people, including healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. It will take place during my NUR344 PEP, where I will have the opportunity to interact with the healthcare team, patients, and their families. Lastly, the goal will be accomplished by the end of my placement, within a specific timeframe.
Effective communication and collaboration with the healthcare team is a critical aspect of nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2021). As a nursing student, it is essential to develop the necessary skills to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals to provide patient-centered care. Effective communication ensures that all healthcare professionals involved in a patient's care are on the same page and have access to the same information, leading to improved patient outcomes. Collaboration also helps to promote a positive work environment and encourages teamwork, which can lead to better job satisfaction for healthcare professionals.
During my NUR344 PEP, I plan to achieve this goal by practicing active listening, respecting cultural differences, and engaging in open and honest communication with the healthcare team, patients, and their families. I will also seek out opportunities to collaborate with other healthcare professionals during my placement to improve my skills in this area. I will reflect on my communication and collaboration skills regularly and seek feedback from clinical educators and patients to assess my progress towards achieving my goal.
Overall, setting a specific SMART goal for my NUR344 PEP will help me to focus my efforts and track my progress towards achieving it. By demonstrating effective communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, including patients and their families, I will be able to provide safe and quality patient care while developing my professional skills.
Measurements
Measuring progress is a critical aspect of achieving a SMART goal (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, 2019). A measurable goal is one that can be quantified or objectively assessed, allowing progress to be tracked and evaluated. A measurable goal should answer the questions: How will I know when I have achieved my goal? What tools will I use to measure my progress? What milestones will I use to track my progress?
In my SMART goal of demonstrating effective communication and collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, including patients and their families, there are several ways in which I can measure my progress. Firstly, I will use the ANSAT (Australian National Standards Assessment Tool) to assess my progress towards achieving this goal. This tool will allow me to...
