Table 2 shows the average “honesty rating” assigned by randomly chosen visitors to a website that reports business news. Each visitor rated the honesty of a corporate annual statement, with 0 meaning the reader attached little truth to the statement and 10 implying that the reader judged the statement to be completely honest. Each artificial statement was described as coming from a financial company, a manufacturer, or a retailer. The statements varied in the amount of detail, ranging from none (a vague press release) to moderate to extensive tables and charts. Sixteen visitors rated each combination of industry and detail.
