T. J. is a full-time student at Somewhere State College, majoring in business administration and accounting. They are also employed full-time as a floor supervisor at a large discount store. T. J. and their ex share custody of their two four year-old children. During this term, T. J. has found themselves facing a number of challenges:

  • Two of their classes require several long research projects that take many hours to complete

  • One of their professors does not provide any constructive feedback on assignments and doesn't answer emails at all

  • Their employer keeps scheduling them for 12-hour shifts on days when they have three on-campus classes despite promising not to

  • They have been arguing with their ex regarding custody during upcoming holidays and who qualifies as trustworthy childcare

  • Their car requires a significant amount of maintenance or it will become unreliable very quickly

After considering T. J.'s situation, describe two ways they could employ problem-focused coping to alleviate some of the stress they're experiencing. Then, describe two ways they could employ emotion-focused coping to alleviate that stress. At least one of the emotion-focused coping examples must be positive, not negative, in terms of its impact on T. J.'s life.
