Introduction
The recent alteration in the development pattern of the people during the time of global recession has an impact on the students who have different from the previous generation. There are other factors like modernization, over-exposure, different ongoing social issues, which shape the student and alters their lifestyle pattern. This lifestyle is determined by their environmental factors, their academic background, the impact of their surroundings and their mental setup.
A better lifestyle, healthy eating habits, disciplined sleeping activities and daily physical activities are some of the determinants of a healthy lifestyle. It has to be identified how these several factors are associated with lifestyle in this paper. The mental health and challenges faced by the students can be handled through a better lifestyle where their academic results, substance abuse are also related to this one factor.
While only improving physical health is not enough to have a good lifestyle, rather a combination of factors, which influence the wellbeing of the individuals. The purpose of this paper is to find out several factors associated with the lifestyle of the students. Mental health, substance abuse, academic performance and economic literacy are a few of these factors, which are linked, with the lifestyle of the students that are briefly discussed in alignment with previous studies.
Student Lifestyle
Student Lifestyle and Mental Health
The critical period of drastic social, cognitive and physical changes is adolescence, which alters the further wellbeing of life. Due to global recession, unemployment, restricted movements, mass migration and many other factors the lifestyle of the students have related to a great extent which impacts their mental and emotional wellbeing. The psychological difficulties due to external events and internal mindset can alter the student's perspective and viewpoint regarding life. The education system, the social surroundings, participation in civic engagement are important factors that have moderated their development (Pigaiani et al., 2020).
Virtual space is occupying most of the students' time and recently due to the pandemic situation, education is even being carried out virtually. The ongoing situation in the world is becoming difficult to cope up with and students are losing motivation as a factor of continuing their healthy lifestyle. Though they are getting more time than before to pursue their interests, a lack of social communication, participation in social events and restriction on mingling up with the outer world has severely caused mental pressures on them.
Most of them are suffering from depression and anxiety. The lifestyle changes though are there among some who are for the positive purpose as they are self-motivated, but in most of the cases, the changes have occurred negatively as they are emotionally unwell. It is hard to conclude, whether lifestyle affects mental health or mental health impacts lifestyle, it is most applicable to say they are interrelated and dependent on each other. In some studies, it has been found that healthy lifestyle practices enhance psychological wellbeing with fewer mental challenges among the students, which helps in preventive mental disorders (Velten, Bieda, Scholten, Wannemüller & Margraf, 2018).
Mental health-related problems further go down with cultural and mental activities that keep the brain functional and rejuvenated, which affects the positive mood and better life and wellbeing of students and a whole. Alcohol intake, smoking, are possible risk factors that deteriorate the physical and mental health of any individual, which is not different for students as well.
It has been evident from studies that student debt hurts their mental health (Pisaniello et al., 2019). Even the stigma associated with mental health has stopped the students from consulting therapists or counselors, which has further increased their level of stress. That is why an open environment is extremely important for the students to cope up and improve their stress level and mental health-related issues (Mousavi et al., 2018).
Student Lifestyle and Substance Use
Alcohol consumption among university students is a major health concern across the world based on which various awareness generation camps are designed to prevent this issue of concern. Tobacco use, alcohol intake is responsible for deaths and health hazards among the students in later life. Poor eating habits and substance use are a very part of university life where individuals alter their developmental needs. This hampers their relationship with parents...
