SO 334 Sociology of Medicine A Guide to the Preparation of Heath Care Project Fall 2022 DUE DATE: December 6th, NO EXCEPTIONS Purpose of the Project: One of the benefits of sociology is that it helps enrich our understanding of the social world we live in. In the case of this course, the social world is the healthcare system that affects all of us. The main purpose of this project is to critically evaluate the U.S. health care and ONE developed country’s health care system, in order to understand ways to improve the U.S. health care. As a result of completing this project, you will gain some knowledge of sociologists’ approach to understand health and health care. In addition, you will develop critical thinking skills using logic and evidence and the ability to research and assess the reliability of sources. Finally, this project asks you to demonstrate your knowledge of the American healthcare system and its challenges in the form of a formal report (with an introduction, conclusion, citations, etc.). You may think that the ability to write a formal report only helps you get good grades in college, but the ability to present a clear and well-organized argument is another important skill that will serve you well in almost any occupation. The Tasks - How should you approach this project? With this Health Care Project, you are asked to analyze one of the three problems in the U.S. health care system. You are expected to apply sociological concepts and ideas to examine rising cost or inequity in American health delivery. In doing this, you should demonstrate that you are able to use logical reasoning and a minimum of three scholarly sources to explain one health care problem and communicate your findings effectively in writing. I recommend that you take the following steps as you research and work on this project. Following these steps will help you produce a more successful report. 1. Part I: Identify one of the three major problems in the U.S. health care system that you will research and write about in the project. For example: this project examines the impact of social class on receiving quality care in the U.S. Your discussion of this problem should be based on your reading of Chapter 15 and a minimum of three scholarly sources. For example, if you focus on health care inequity, you need to explain who are most likely affected and what cause the inequity. 1. Part II: Compare and contrast the U.S. health care system with one developed country’s healthcare delivery system, such as united kingdom. Part II of your report should be based on your reading of Chapter 16 and additional research of this country you have done for the Group Presentation. The question you need to address in Part II is: what can the United States learn from this country to address one of its health care challenges that you reviewed in Part I? For example, if you focus on health inequity in Part I, in Part II you will explain how this country, such as Canada, deal with healthcare inequity. What can the U.S. learn from Canada to address inequity in health care? 1. Part III: Conclusion and recommendations. In your recommendations as a conclusion, you need to explain the type of health care policy you would recommend for the Biden administration to tackle the health care problem you identified and reported in this project. For example, if you focus on health inequity, what policy recommendations would you make to address the health inequity problem in the U.S? For your research project, you need to use at least three scholarly sources, which do not include textbooks, encyclopedia, popular magazines, or newspapers. The first place to start is the references in the back of your textbook. An important place to find scholarly sources is the online database of the Jennings Library. Please check with me regarding the sources used in your project. Note: I am happy to discuss with you this research paper, review an outline, or read a draft of your project. If you wish to discuss the report, please email me. If you want me to read a draft, please allow at least one week for me to read the draft and get it back to you with my comments.
