What’s in store for Walmart?
1. What are the major moral complaints of the women suing Wal-Mart? Do you believe these complaints are justified? Why or why
not? Wal-Mart has said that the case should not be heard as a class action suit, but that each woman should be considered individually and that an individual determination should be made regarding whether she specifically was discriminated against by Wal-Mart because each woman’s situation is different. Do you agree?
The major moral complaints by women suing Wal-Mart included claims that the company discriminated against female employees in promotions, pay, management training, and job assignments. I believe the complaints are justified. This kind of discrimination is clearly evident in the studies made by Drogin, Bendick and Bielby. Wal-Mart seems justified in its demand for the case not be classed as a class action suit since the company has not practiced discrimination as a policy instead it is individual managers who have committed the discrimination (Velasquez 328-332)
1. What financial impact do you think the lawsuit could potentially have on Wal-Mart? What if the outcome of the case cost Wal-Mart so much it had to lay off thousands of its workers and close stores?
The lawsuit could have a huge detrimental financial impact on Wal-Mart and could cost it millions in loss. The impact of huge loss to Wal-Mart could result in laying off workers and closing stores which would cause harm to many more employees both male and female, working in these stores. However, acts of discrimination have to be brought to justice since female workers work as hard as male workers but do not get the same compensation or promotion opportunities.
