Submit Assignment: MAPP Phases: Organizing & Visioning
In Week 1, you were asked to use the CHSI 2015 tool to identify leading health indicators in your community. Review that list of health indicators and choose one of greatest concern to you.
Choose carefully as this health issue will become the focus of your MAPP Final Project. You will apply this health issue to every phase of MAPP in weeks 2, 4, 6, and 7.
(Note:
Before you begin this MAPP phase, take a moment to review the overview of the entire MAPP project found in Week 1.)
What is MAPP?
MAPP (Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) is a strategic approach to community health improvement. It is a planning process by which community-level strategic planning is leveraged to help communities address public health issues.
This entire project is a proposal for how your community could address the identified health issue (leading health indicator) using the MAPP process.
MAPP Phases: Organizing and Visioning
This week, students will begin the MAPP process for their chosen community. You are a public health professional who has been given the task of developing a process to address the chosen health issue in your community. You have decided to use the MAPP process to address the issue.
The first phase of MAPP is Organizing. To see an overview of the Organizing phase, please visit:
- http://www.naccho.org/topics/infrastructure/mapp/framework/phase1over.cfm
In order to complete the Organizing Phase, you must:
- Identify relevant stakeholders and collaborators in the community with whom the proposed process is of interest. Ask questions like, “who is affected”, “who can help”, “ how would the stakeholder contribute to health improvements”, and “with whom should I collaborate in order for this project to be successful”?
- Assess your resource needs. Ask questions like, “what materials or knowledge does this process need for success?” Think about meeting space, report production and printing, and costs associated with information gathering and data collection, for example. Assume that your budget is met so focus more on tangible needs and possibly how your stakeholders could meet those needs.
The second phase of MAPP is Visioning. To see sample questions to ask to help develop vision and value statements, please visit: http://www.naccho.org/topics/infrastructure/mapp/framework/phase2over.cfm
In order to complete the Visioning Phase, you must:
- Develop Vision and Values Statements. According to NACCHO (2015), the “vision statement should be strong and powerful and represent the ideal future outlined during the visioning process. The values statement should emphasize a positive climate and supportive behaviors that contribute to achieving the vision.” Develop one vision statement and 2-3 value statements by which your MAPP process will be guided from start to finish. Think of this as your “philosophical foundation” for the entire process.
