Introduction
As term ‘risk taking' usuall
y has the negative connotations, truth has been that
willingness for engaging in certain risky activities gives the options for learning the newer
skills, trying the newer behaviours and ultimately reaching our potential. Risk and challenge,
in particular at the time of outdoor play, it permits to children for testing limits of its physical,
social and intellectual development. The paper examines research review about positive and
negative effects of playing in the outdoor.
Among the initial childhood area, play has longer been acknowledged as the essential
context for the development and learning of the children. Play has been significant aspect of
its lives, thus reflecting its cultural and social contexts. Subsequently, changes among those
contexts have impact on both quality and nature of the play experiences of the children. The
paper is focused towards examining the outdoor play in light of the environmental and the
social factors, which have impacted on the play experiences of children. This gives the
review of literature drawing on the findings from the range of the disciplines.
Value of Play
There is a considerable research that is documenting vital role of play to foster
optimal growth, development and learning within all the domains i.e. physical, the cognitive,
the social, the emotional in the entire childhood (Meire, Not defined). Play gives the vehicle
for children for both demonstrating and developing knowledge, skills, dispositions and
concepts.
Play gives the non threatening context to the children for learning of its world as well
as gaining the skills required for the adult life. Through its interactions with environment at

the time of play, children gain control & ultimately mastery over its bodies with development
of the range of the motor and manipulative skills.
They learn newer concepts and skills, discovering world & learning of them and also
others by its interactions in the variety of social situations. In addition, play also facilitates
the language development, problem solving and the creative thinking & also helps the
children to deal among the competing and complicated emotions.
Current status of outdoor play
In the regular evolving world, the environmental and the social factors have majorly
impacted on the opportunities of the children for the outdoor play. Where once the children
can spend time playing in street i.e. riding the bicycles, playing the ball games and chasing
games & enjoying rest of the outdoor pastimes i.e. the enhanced traffic has made those fields
& plays the options off limits...
