Introduction
Rugby is one of the most popular sports events that take place in many countries. The professional sports league are mainly structured in such a manner that it aims to drive the fan engagement and to make the sport event an attractive product for the consumer. The primary and the most fundamental purpose of the organising body of league is to ensure that the sporting event must be attractive, have a balanced competition and an uncertain outcome of the matches.
Therefore, it can be seen that it is relevant for the governing bodies to organise and control the league in order to meet the organisational objectives. However there are instances where it is found that there are certain internal management problems arises that could lead to failure of attaining the organisational objective of the league. In this assignment, the detailed discussion will be made regarding the problems faced in the National Rugby League, the causes, which lead to the occurrence of problems. Further, the recommendations will be suggested as to overcome these challenges.
1. Identification of the Problem
The National Rugby League (NRL) is one of the top most domestic men’s Rugby League Club Competitions of Australia. The league contains the teams from the original Sydney Club Rugby League Competition, which has been running since 1908. Mostly the NRL matches are played in between Australia and New Zealand in the time of March to October (NRL, 2020). There are many matches that are being played and that is leading to the popularity among the audience to witness the matches. However, there are certain challenges like any other league are faced by the management of NRL. These kinds of challenges may occur because of the lack of proper governance from the management or from the audiences and people itself. According to the news published in The Daily Telegraph (March 2, 2015), there are many issues that the National Rugby League is facing, which are as follows:
· The Crowded House: In today’s world, all the match coverage is telecasted on the TV and the manner, in which they are telecasted, will suffice the need of the audience. Therefore there are considerable amount of lesser footfalls in the stadium, which is a matter of concern for the league because of loss of revenue.
· Integrity of the League: The NRL is much more concerned regarding the integrity of the unit. There is a budget of around AUD two million annually in order to monitor the integrity of the employees and the club members, however the controversy does arises, which is a questionable mark on the integrity of the league.
· The Wrestling Tactics: In the game there has been seen that the fair play is missing and there is a tactics of fighting among the players, which is harming the game spirit.
· Expansion of the League: There are instances, which are seen regarding the expansion issue of the league, which is related to the inclusion of more teams and the TV rights that are entitled to be given to network providers.
· The Economic Problem: The league is also undergoing the economic problems and there are chances that if the matter is addressed not properly in time then the matter will go out of hand.
· Scheduling of the Games:. This has been seen that because of the lack of approval or availability of the venue and other issues, problems are occurring to the proper scheduling of the game.
These are few challenges that are often faced by the league where the management part is involved along with the problems involved on the part of the audiences. Further, in the news published by ABC News (April 17, 2020), it is mentioned that because of the ongoing Covid pandemic there has been a serious issue regarding the continuation of the game. The management is mostly concerned regarding where the matches will be played and what are the safety features or arrangements will be made with respect to the players and the audiences who will attend the game.
