Students are required to write a research proposal, based on the format presented in the chapter entitled “Research Processes” (please find it on the attachment) from the core reading in Social Research Methods ebook (2019), edited by Maggie Walter. The core components of the proposal are outlined on pages 73-74 of the text. Please note that an additional element has been added for the purposes of this assessment task – in the form of “Introduction: Background and Identification of Research Gaps”



Please note that your Literature Review (please find it on the attachment) is intended to inform this Research Proposal. The topic isHow does substance abuse impact parenting and children development.Your topic must involve research with human subjects and be relevant to the social work profession. You are not able to develop a proposal which does not require recruitment and participation of research participants – for example, your proposal could not be an analysis of existing literature. Please note thatyou will not be conducting any research for this course –but rather, developing a researchproposal.

    Background of the Research
Substance abuse is a pervasive Public Health issue that affects individuals and families worldwide. According to the National Survey on drug use and Health, approximately 19.3 million Americans aged 12 and older had substance use disorder in 2020. Substance use and have a significant impact on many aspects of individuals' lives including relationships and the aspects of unemplo
yment and physical and mental health (Barnard, 2020). One area that is particularly affected by substance abuse is parenting and child development. Substance abuse can impact parenting in a variety of ways from emotional availability to consistency and discipline.
Additionally, children of parents who abuse substances may be at increased risk for a range of developmental issues including emotional and behavioural problems. This can also be associated with the range of cognitive delays and attachment difficulties that enhance the difficulties in terms of cognitive development of the children. The impact of substance abuse on parenting and child development can be influenced by a range of factors that includes the type and security of the substance used and the age and gender of the child (Berndt, 2020). For example, in some aspects, it is relevant to consider that maternal substance abuse during pregnancy can have a severe impact on infant development including increased risk for low birth weight and preterm birth. Additionally, children who are exposed to parental substance abuse may be at an increased risk of trauma or neglect, or any other forms of abuse.
There is also significant variation in how parents who abuse substances approach parenting and in the specific challenges their face. Some parents abuse substances with maintaining consistency and boundaries and schedules while others may be emotionally unavailable or struggle with managing their emotional regulation. Additionally, substance abuse can impact parents' ability to meet their child's basic needs including providing adequate nutrition or any other aspect such as hygiene or other relevant supervision. Given the complexity and variability of the impact of substance abuse on parenting and child development, it is important to consider multiple perspectives and approaches in research on this topic. This may include exploding the experience and perspective of the parents who are in recovery engaging with the community affected by substance abuse and explicitly focusing into utilise the interdisciplinary approaches that draw on the expertise from the fields of psychology and public health (Bromfield et al., 2020).
Research Gaps
The research gaps in our understanding of how substance abuse impacts parenting and child development it is effective to understand the specific mechanisms by which substance abuse affects children's development or how different types of substances may have different effects. Additionally, while they are interventions available to support families affected by substance abuse there is still a must to learn about the most effective approaches and how to tailor interventions to individual family needs. By exploring these research gaps, it is effective to understand the impact of substance use on parenting and child development and identify new ways to support families affected by substance use.

    The theoretical framework for this research is drawn from a range of psychological and social theories that helps us to understand the complex relationships between substance abuse, parenting, and child development.
Theoretical it is particular that this particular research is more imperative about the relevant aspects of the attachment theory (Cleaver et al., 2020). According to the attachment theory, the quality of early parent-child relationships shapes the development of attachment styles which in turn influence a range of social and cognitive outcomes throughout the lifespan of the children. By using the attachment theory to guide our understanding of the mechanisms underline the impact of substance abuse on child development we can develop a more targeted intervention to support families affected by substance abuse. Another important theory that is relevant to this particular research is the ecological systems theory. This particular theory emphasizes the importance of understanding how individual development is shaped by a range of interconnected factors including the aspects of family and the broader community context. Using an ecological systems framework to guide our analysis can help to explore the complex ways in which substance abuse impacts parenting and child development and identify the opportunities for intervention and support at multiple levels (Kroll et al., 2020).
Social learning theory is also relevant to this research as it emphasizes the role of modelling and reinforcement in shaping behaviour.
