E1050 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
1. Overview
During your work placement, you will be undertaking a variety of duties and tasks that relate to your course and the role of an early childhood educator and carer. You will need to successfully demonstrate that you can perform tasks required in the work environment and collect evidence.
Your work placement Portfolio is divided into 2 Parts and should be submitted separately. This is Work Placement Portfolio Part 1.
Your Work Placement Portfolio Part 2 34940/P2 should be submitted separately. You will need to complete your portfolio within the original Portfolio Assessment downloaded from Open Space. When uploading your portfolio for submission, you can submit as a single Word document or a single PDF document.
Your Supervisor will give you guidance and feedback on your performance, supporting you to complete the tasks in an appropriate and professional manner.
Evidence of your performance must be collected and submitted to your Open Colleges Assessor. This document, Work Placement Portfolio Part 1, consists of nine (9) tasks that are outlined with instructions on how to collect evidence.
2. Work Placement Portfolio
Your Open Colleges Workplace Assessor will talk to your Approved Workplace Supervisor about all the tasks you have completed throughout your work placement. Your Approved Workplace Supervisor will confirm that you have completed each task according to the instructions, and so you need to ensure your Approved Workplace Supervisor witnesses each task as you complete them.
Work Placement Portfolio Part 1 needs to be uploaded once you have completed all nine (9) tasks in a single Word document or a single PDF document.
Important note for students and supervisors
All tasks in this document must be completed and individually signed and dated. We are not able to accept ‘group’ or ‘combined’ signatures or dates.
Protocols for observing, photographing and recording children
· You must obtain permission to observe, photograph and/or digitally record children (as applicable) when you are working with children and carrying out the tasks in this Portfolio.
· Also ensure you adhere to all organisational policies and procedures for observing, photographing and recording.

General reflections
Reflect on the children’s responses and your own involvement. Consider the questions below when reflecting on this task and insert your response (maximum 200-300 words) depending on task requirements).
Task you are reflecting on (insert Task number from Portfolio): Task 1
Briefly summarise what happened during this task/experience:
In the task, two children Nova of age 3 years 4 months and Ashray of 4 years participated in the preparation meals. The meal preparation selected for the task was Pizza. The vegetables were cut and cleaned prior in order to avoid injuries or cuts. At Early Miles Stone day care, both the children were first introduced to each other. Then I explained to them what we are going to prepare. I asked Nova (3.4 years) to put the flat bread on the plate and lay pizza toppings and the grated cheese slabs over the bread. While I asked Frank (4 years) to add vegetables, dried basil and pizza sauce so that they all fit over the bread instead of getting spilled on the plate. Once the vegetables were arranged, I asked Ashray to put the other bread over the first bread carefully without spilling the vegetables in oven. I helped switching on the oven. After 10 mins I took out the prepared pizza from the oven.
Questions for reflection
Your reflection
What worked well?
While working closely with Nova and Ashray, I realised that both were very enthusiastic about the activity. They followed the instructions properly an made sure there were no spillage or wastage. I was surprised how well Nova managed working closely with Ashray and helping each other. While I was asking the children putting the vegetable, I noticed that were encourage by the mixture of coloured vegetables. They were creative in arranging them. Nova was very keen on knowing why I have selected those particular vegetables. And Ashray was happy that I have added cheese as he like them. I explained to them how protein and fresh vegetables were essential for their health. I also asked them their food preferences and what they liked eating.
What didn’t work well?
I think should have added more of soy protein, dairy and nuts as both Ashray and Nova liked having them and they were not allergic to them. I should have explored more with the vegetables and colourful food items. I needed to carry food charts so that I could communicated more with the children and interest them more in proper diets.
What would you do differently/improve on in the future?
I would add more protein like soy protein, dairy and nuts, I would carry food charts with me to communicate better with the children and add more colourful vegetables like beets, beans, capsicums, peas.

Use the ‘General reflections template’, Appendix A (maximum 300 words) to document. This must be signed and dated by your Approved Workplace Supervisor.
Does this task need to be completed before the Workplace Assessor visit? No
Required Task
a) Prepare to feed a child a bottle:
· Research 1: Collect information on infant feeding requirements and food safety guidelines for babies and toddlers, including dietary requirements and nutritional needs. This should include accepted preparation methods for a breastmilk bottle and a formula bottle. Follow these requirements whilst carrying out this Task. Suggested resource: NSW Health 2014, Caring for Children – Birth to 5 years (Food, Nutrition and Learning Experiences).
· Research 2: Obtain a signed permission form to with the children, Appendix G. Also, sight each child’s records about their culture, diet and allergy requirements, and/or discuss these with the child’s family/educators. This should include information about the preferred method of feeding this child, and the child’s individual cues for hunger. Refer to this information whilst carrying out this Task.
· Familiarise yourself with the preparation requirements for a bottle of formula and a bottle of breastmilk as follows:
· Formula Bottle: (if there are no children on formula in your service, refer to the contingency plan advice below, or discuss this with your Open Colleges Workplace Assessor). Check the label of the milk formula and compare the instructions to those you have received from the child’s carers, family and the child’s records. Note: Discuss any discrepancies with your Approved Workplace Supervisor before you continue.
· Breastmilk Bottle: (if there are no children on breastmilk in your service, refer to the contingency plan advice below, or discuss this with your Open Colleges Workplace Assessor). Refer to your two research points above and check that the provided breastmilk is in accordance with food and safety guidelines and has been stored correctly. Ensure that the provided breastmilk is for the appropriate child. Discuss the method you would prepare this child’s bottle with your Approved Workplace Supervisor before you continue.
· Clean and sterilise the environment you will use to prepare the bottle (tabletop, sink, etc), and the bottle-feeding equipment and utensils (bottles, teats, spoons, etc).
· Record the task as per the requirements of your service e.g. complete the service’s bottle preparation checklist.
b) Prepare a bottle and feed the child:
· Once you notice the child is indicating possible cues of hunger, prepare the bottle in accordance with the appropriate instructions and in accordance with your service’s policies and procedures. If the child’s family provides premixed bottles to your service, refer to the contingency plan advice below, or discuss this with your Work Place Assessor.
· The temperature of the bottle contents will need to be appropriate for the child - consider your research for this Task. Take any appropriate actions in this regard. Ensure you test the temperature of the contents of the prepared bottle, before providing this to the child.
· Settle the child comfortably and provide the bottle to the child, interacting with the child as appropriate. Note: this may include burping the child.
· Once complete, settle the child as appropriate.
c) Clean up and document the child’s intake:
· After you have fed the child the bottle and settled them safely and comfortably, clean up the environment, equipment and utensils.
· Document the feed, as per your service requirements e.g. complete the child’s bottle-feeding checklist or record.
d) Complete a written reflection, Appendix A (maximum 200 words), on the task of preparing the bottles and the feeding of one (1) child. Please remember to document your involvement and future planning.
· Briefly summarise what happened during the preparation of the two (2) bottles and when feeding your focus child.
· Reflect on the child’s responses and your own involvement. Consider these questions when reflecting:
· what worked well?
· what didn’t work well?
· what would you do differently in the future?
· Identify possible areas for your own improvement.

Task 2 Contingency Plans
Contingency plans A, B or C below may be used as appropriate:
Contingency Plan A: no children on formula
If there are no children in your service that are on formula, you may substitute powdered milk instead of formula. The directions must be followed to ensure a correct mix is achieved, as well as appropriately mixing to ensure all powder has dissolved. Please note that whilst this prepared milk may be used elsewhere (as appropriate) to avoid wastage, it is not to be given to children under 24 months of age.
Contingency Plan B: no children on breastmilk
If there are no children in your service that are on breastmilk, you may substitute cow’s milk (preferably un-homogenised as the fat in the milk comes to the top and can be mixed into the milk with a gentle shake, which is the case with breastmilk). Note: Breastmilk looks different to cow’s milk or formula. Please note that whilst this prepared milk may be used elsewhere (as appropriate) to avoid wastage, it is not to be given to children under 24 months of age.
Contingency Plan C: premixed bottles provided by family
If the families in your service provide premixed (prepared) bottles, you will still need to demonstrate the preparation of one formula and one breastmilk bottle while your Approved Workplace Supervisor observes/supervises. You will also still need to feed a child a bottle and complete all steps in Task 2, omitting the steps that involve feeding the child a bottle prepared by you.
Note: For further guidance on following the contingency plans above, please ask your Open Colleges Workplace Assessor.

Research 1
Briefly answer the following questions (maximum 200 words):
What information did you collect on infant feeding requirements and food safety guidelines for babies and toddlers, including dietary requirements and nutritional needs?
The babies of age in between the age of 9 months to 12 months the child will require feedings of 8 ounces with 2 to 3 feeding per 24 hours. Although type breast milk is one of the best formulae for the child, however supplemented breast feeding can also be provided to the child if the child is more than 3 to 4 weeks.
What information did you collect on accepted preparation methods for a breastmilk bottle and a formula bottle?
During the preparation of the breast milk, the storage and temperature of the formulae needs to be appropriate. The bottles are first cleaned and sterilised. The bags of the frozen breast milk are brought at room temperature and then shaken so that the milk is thoroughly mixed with the creamy layer. In case of prepared formulae, after the sterilisation of the bottle, the stored formulae is added in the correct quantity in the heating water and then poured in the bottle.
How did you follow these requirements whilst carrying out this Task?
Hinata is the selected child in this task. The prepared formulae were prepared by following the above techniques. After sterilisation of the bottle, 2 scoops of prepared formulae will be added to 120 ml of warm water. In case she is hungry, 3 scoops in 180 ml of hot water will be added. Hinata prefers to have hot solutions, hence, while feeding it was ensured that the formula was hot.
Research 2
Briefly answer the following questions (maximum 200 words):
Did you obtain signed permission form to observe and work with the child?
Yes, a signed consent was taken from the parents of the child before carrying out the test.
What information did you sight from each child’s records about their culture, diet and allergy requirements, and/or discuss these with the child’s family/educators?
The information that were collected from Hinata includes, the child is 6 months old, female. She is from Cooks Island, Samoan origin. Her family speaks English. She does not have a fixed sleeping routine. She is currently on bottle feed which is mostly pre-prepared formulae.
What information did you gather about the preferred method of feeding this child, and the child’s individual cues for hunger?
Hinata usually prefers being fed from the bottle, provided the solution is hot. In case the milk formulae is at room temperature or cold she will not take it. Further, ideally, Hinata take 120 ml of the solution, but if she wants more, she will let one know and a solution of 180 ml will be prepared for her.
How did you refer to this information whilst carrying out this Task?
I found the available information was helpful, especially during feeding, I observed Hinata does not have much trouble in feeding process and she shakes her head side by side or sucks her lips and tongue when she wants more. In such cases I had prepared a solution of 180 ml of the formulae.

General reflections
Reflect on the children’s responses and your own involvement. Consider the questions below when reflecting on this task and insert your response (maximum 200-300 words) depending on task requirements).
Task you are reflecting on (insert Task number from Portfolio): 2
Briefly summarise what happened during this task/experience:
During this task I prepared the bottled formulae according to the suggested quantity of 2 scoops in the solution of hot water of 120 ml. I made sure Hinata is been fed after every two to three hours. In case she shows symptoms of hunger, I prepared for her a bottle of 180 ml.
Questions for reflection
Your reflection
What worked well?
The information collected prior regarding Hinata had helped me in feeding process of Hinata. Since she was 6 months of age and she required feeding in between every two to three hours. Her mother told me that Hinata suckles her lips and tongue when she is hungry or want more of her feed. I also prepared the formulae just few minutes before feeding Hinata. This avoided keeping the solution in the room temperature for a longer period of time which can cause stomach upset in the child.
What didn’t work well?
Since I knew that Hinata prefers warm solution, I made sure while feeding the bottle was warm before feeding her. However, I did realise while heating that the formulae gets unevenly heated and can create hot spots if it is not warmed appropriately.
What would you do differently/improve on in the future?
In future, I will make sure while feeding the baby, the warmth of the solution is equally distributed equally throughout the solution. Another aspect which I noticed while feeding Hinata was it is better to sit the baby uptight while feeding the baby and prevented gas. So next time onward I would allow the child to sit uptight while feeding or I might put her on swing so that the motion help her sooth after feeding.

Does this task need to be completed before the Workplace Assessor visit? No
Required Task
a) Prepare to feed a hot meal to a child
· Research 1: To prepare yourself adequately, refer to infant feeding requirements and food safety guidelines, including dietary requirements and nutritional needs of babies and toddlers. Note: you would already have done this in Task 2.
· Research 2: Obtain a signed permission form to work with the child. You will then need to sight (i.e. child’s various records) and/or discuss (i.e.: with family/educators) the children’s culture, diet and allergy requirements beforehand. This will include finding out the preferred method of feeding this child, and the child’s individual cues and preferences. Ensure you include this research in carrying out this task. Note: This cannot be the same child as the one you bottle-fed in Task 2.
· Consider the hot meal (including the individual ingredients) that has been selected for the child and whether is it appropriate for this child, based on your research above. You should also consider at least one alternative meal, in case the child does not like the meal you are initially providing.
· You will also need to include a drink for the child. The food and drink should meet the dietary requirement guidelines for the child’s age group. If you are unsure, discuss this with your Approved Workplace Supervisor before proceeding. Document the food and drink (including ingredients) and any alternative meals you could consider in Appendix I.
· Ensure that you, your working environment (i.e. tabletop, sink, etc) and all equipment and utensils (i.e. plates, spoons, etc) are sterile (where applicable), safe and clean.
· Prepare the food and drink for the child, heating the food according to the service policy and procedures. The temperature of the food will need to be appropriate for the child – consider your research for this task. Take any appropriate actions in this regard.
· Prepare the child to receive the meal. Ensure all eating areas, furniture and utensils are appropriate for the age of the child and are safe and clean.
b) Feed the child
· Interact appropriately with the child whilst they are eating and drinking, and you are feeding them, and encourage and assist them as needed.
· Respond to the child’s cues/language and encourage the child to be as independent as possible.
· Where possible allow the child opportunities to gain new skills, develop self-knowledge and awareness, use and listen to language and enhance their emotional/psychological development.
· If required, adjust the environment and/or your actions to support the child’s requirements.
· Once the child has finished eating and drinking, ensure the child is clean and settle the child, as appropriate.
c) Clean up after the feed and document child’s intake
· Clean up the environment, equipment, utensils, etc, as required.
d) Document the child’s intake
· Record the child’s intake as per your service’s requirements e.g. meal/food checklist
e) Complete ‘General reflections template’, Appendix A (maximum 300 words) on the task and your involvement, and consider future planning:
· Briefly summarise what happened during the planning and implementation feeding a child a hot meal.
· Reflect on the child’s responses and your own involvement. Consider these questions when reflecting:
· what worked well?
· what didn’t work well?
· what would you do differently in the future?
· Identify possible areas for your own improvement.
· Discuss your reflection with your Approved Workplace Supervisor.
