This was achieved by analyzing evidence-based interventions and approaches by conducting a systematic literature review on mental health related issues for teens in the U.S. This allowed me to determine the prevalence of high-risk behaviors associated with intimate partner violence, alcohol abuse, and eating disorders, as well as identify how these behaviors influence mental health outcomes. Demographical data including race, gender, and SES were reviewed prior to creating lesson plans, in order to gather information on community health disparities. Additionally, community health needs were assessed by navigating local resources and examining potential barriers for accessing services among the target population. 2. Communicate audience-appropriate public health content, both in writing and through oral presentation Virtual Internship The students were presented with materials that are age-appropriate, relevant, and evidence-based. They were also provided with background information on less familiar topics, such as trauma, domestic abuse, and alcohol misuse. Utilizing politically correct language was important while planning lesson plans and covering content. At the beginning of each presentation students were asked to be respectful towards their peers while contributing to class discussions. Additionally, participants were given prior notice that the lessons were going to cover sensitive materials. Symptoms associated with certain mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder were discussed during the lessons using basic terminologies. Each topic was addressed orally and through writing that included clear definitions of materials for students to better understand the content that was covered. The information presented to students was unbiased and based on credible data. 3. Apply awareness of cultural values and practices to the design or implementation of public health policies or programs Virtual Internship The information that was presented to students reflected inclusivity and respect towards different backgrounds, gender identities, sexual preferences, ages, and socioeconomic status. The designs incorporated public health approaches that not only work on an individual level but also at the collective level by using examples during lessons that satisfy both. For instance, the intimate partner violence presentation provided scenarios that included same-sex relationships in addition to heterosexual relationships. While introducing mental health related initiatives, cultural effectiveness was taken into consideration by identifying expectations of high school students. Cultural sensitivity was implemented by avoiding stereotypes that may be alienating for certain students. These components were used to discuss public health concerns during the pandemic and to address why risk factors for these types of disorders were increasing. For instance, information from the lesson on IPV discussed the link between depression and the occurrence of abuse from a previous or current partner. The materials included reports and surveys taken throughout multiple countries. These IPV related materials were used to inform students of the severity of the issue. 2. Design population-based mental health interventions and programs. Virtual Internship The population-based intervention design involved health education lesson plans for high school students between the ages of 16 to 18 years old. This type of intervention was used to bring attention to certain risk factors, such as binge drinking, overeating, and abuse that are associated with increased mental health concerns surrounding COVID-19. Students were given background information on mental health outcomes and then encouraged to participate in activities, such as answering True and False questions. This type of interactive activity allowed for students to demonstrate what they had learned and address misconceptions about the topics. The materials covered were used as an early intervention for the target population, in order to provide them with age-appropriate information on intimate partner violence, alcohol abuse, and eating disorders prior to entering college or the work force.
