Student Guide: Development of Practice Improvement Portfolio

Preface to the Facilitator:

The following session outline has been developed to assist students with the preparation and completion of the Assessment 1 requirements:

Practice Improvement Portfolio. Purpose of the session

The purpose of this classroom-based session is to

1). Explore a Professional Portfolio

2). Discuss the role of critical reflection in reviewing clinical practice

3). Explore the Portfolio Practice Improvement workbook on Pebble Pad

4). Commence review of the NSG2ANB subject template.

Background and rationale

This subject being the summative subject of the Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery degree prepares the students for the reality of practice. It is expected that through this classroom-based simulation students will build upon and consolidate previously acquired knowledge and skills to assist in the reflection and critical analysis of their clinical practice.

What is a Portfolio

A Portfolio is more than a collection of documents, certificates, photographs. It takes its shape as a professional portfolio through the reflections and connections that are built by the portfolio author or developer.

Connections are the links between the actual experiences, practices, thoughts and ideas, and the relevant or necessary frameworks, standards, tools or expectations of the individual nurse or midwife and their profession.

These connections are created and described by the individual portfolio author most commonly through reflective thinking and analysis.

The frameworks, standards, tools or expectations that might shape a portfolio could be standards for registration, practice or education; specialty, competency or continuing professional development standards as endorsed in Australia by the National Boards that are part of the National Registration Accreditation Scheme (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency 2015); or even national safety and quality standards (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2012).

For you as a student in this subject, the framework guiding the structure of your portfolio is directed by the requirements of this subject. These requirements are based on the ILOs for the subject and underpin all the learning and assessment requirements for the subject and for your portfolio activity.

Subject Intended Learning outcomes

The following learning outcome will be addressed in this enquiry

Enabling Outcome

1

Design, Plan and execute nursing care that is effective and efficient

2

Critically evaluate nursing practice-includes reflecting on personal clinical practice performance.

3

Analyse, assess and recommend nursing practice improvement opportunities based on contemporary research.

Class Preparation

In preparation for this classroom-based simulation, students are expected to revise content presented in:

• module 1 – Introduction to Critical Reflective Thinking

• module 4 – Reflective Practice, Transforming Practice

• module 5 – Innovation and Change Agency

• Locate your portfolio workbook in Pebble Pad.

The workbook has been structured to allow you to work methodically through the clinical nursing subjects that you have completed in the past 18 – 24 months of your course.

Resources Required for this session

A portable computer device such as a laptop or iPad with Internet access is required for this class. Students will begin work on their own Practice Improvement Portfolio during this session.

Session 1 Class Activity:

What is a Professional Portfolio (Time allocated for this activity = 10 minutes)

• What is the relevance of a Portfolio for you at this point in your nursing/midwifery training?

• What are the elements of a Professional Portfolio?

• How does a Professional Portfolio compare with what you are required to produce for your Practice Improvement Portfolio?

Getting Started on your Portfolio (Time allocated for this activity 30 minutes)

Your facilitator will open the Pebble Pad Portfolio link on the overhead and discuss the following steps required to complete your portfolio:

Step

1 Introduction

Read the background and rationale section on this pag

·
Access Module 1 on the LMS subject site

·
watch the lecture: 'Developing a Professional Portfolio' located within the Module 1 link

·
complete the pre-workshop preparation for Developing your professional portfolio - located within the Module 1 link on LMS

• Attend the Zoom based (CR simulation) session Developing your professional portfolio - please note, your portfolio will be commenced in this workshop.

Step 2 Nursing Self Evaluation section

The aim of this section is to help you reflect on your most recent clinical placements; while there are three (3) mapping templates available (NSG2ANB, NSG3MHI, NSG3RDP/RDM), you need to complete one (1) subject mapping exercise. The mapping exercise that you are required to complete for this section will help you to explore how your professional knowledge and clinical practice has developed over the past 18 months of the course. It will also help you to identify the areas that you may still be struggling with and need to further develop before you start your career as a Registered Nurse/Midwife.

Your facilitator will

a) Discuss the sample mapping template for NSG2ANA (this example is available in your Portfolio link)

b) Discuss the role of reflective practice in reviewing your past subject experiences. c) Provide an example using the Gibbs Reflective cycle of a clinical event.

Step 3 Nursing Standards section

In this section you will briefly summarise what you believe is your current level of professional knowledge and clinical skills for each of the seven (7) Nursing Standards of Practice. Your summary will guide you in developing your clinical objectives for the NSG3NRC/NMP clinical placement.

Your facilitator will discuss an example of how to write a summary which is brief but concise.

Step 4 Action Plan

Although you have summarised what you believe is your knowledge and skill level for all 7 standards, in this section you are required to develop an Action Plan for only two (2) Nursing Practice Standards. It is important that your choice of the 2 Nursing Standards for this section, is guided by those areas of your practice that you feel are in the most need of further improvement or development.

Your facilitator will provide an example and lead discussion on how to develop an Action Plan.

Step 5 Writing clinical objectives for your NSG3NRC/NMP Clinical Placement.

Having completed your 2 action plans in this section you are required to write clinical objectives for each of the 2 Standards. Your clinical objectives will help you to prepare and guide your clinical placement for NSG3NRC/NMP.

Session 2 Class Activity:

Student Led Activity Creating your Practice Improvement Portfolio

(Time allocated for this activity = 50 mins)

Instructions for Students Open up your Pebble Pad link to the Practice Improvement Portfolio using the LMS link located in the Assessment tile for NSG3NRC/NSG3NMP: o Assessment 1: Practice Improvement Portfolio

(2. Nursing Self Evaluation)

2. Download the sample template for NSG2ANA.

In session 1, your facilitator discussed the examples provided in the NSG2ANA mapping template. You may wish to refer to this sample template to guide you when completing the mapping exercise for your nominated subject.

3. Download the mapping template for NSG2ANB/Nsg3MHI or NSG3NRC/NMP.

During this session you are allocated time to start mapping your reflections of practice for one of these subjects.

You may wish to discuss some of your reflections with other students. Your facilitator will also be able to assist individual students with queries during this activity.

Class Activity:
