Introduction
The supplied case study titled ‘Targeting a broken heart’ sheds light on the actions of Facebook pertaining to a break-up scenario of its users. The case study points out that Facebook carefully follows the profiles of its users and critically analyses each update given by the users to find out the probabilities of any upcoming break-up. For instance, as per Facebook, its users demonstrate an increased interest in attending events when going through a break-up as opposed to other cases.
Facebook, in turn, uses these signals to alert respective companies regarding prospective customers. These companies aim to provide new experiences as well as alternative hobby development strategies to the people having had break-ups. Hence, in this manner, Facebook seems to fuel a business set-up, connecting service providers with prospective customers. The following essay attempts to study the ethical background of Facebook’s actions based on a number of theories ranging from the Utilitarianism Theory to the Contract Theory.
1. Utilitarianism Theory
One of the most prominent ethical theories is the utilitarianism theory. According to Mulgan (2014), the origin of this ethical theory has been credited to the British philosopher Jeremy Bentham.
