Assessment details

500-1000 words

We've been reading and exploring many texts and ideas throughout the unit so far. This assessment is designed to get you engaged closely with one of these texts and to develop ideas from that text. In this assignment you will need to:

  • Extract a key sentence fromparticular readingsoffered through the unit

  • Develop sentences that address why that sentence is key and how it has changed yourthinking.

  • Develop paragraphs that expand and further articulate the last sentence further.

Step 1. Choose one of the following extracts

  • Foucault, M. (1977)excerpt from 'Docile Bodies' p . 135-139 end of paragraph 2 "Discipline is a political anatomy of detail',Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison,London, Allen Lane

Foucault Michel 1977 Discipline and punish 135-141 (1).pdf

  • Butler, J. (1990)excerpt from "The Compulsory Order of Sex/Gender/Desire p. 8 "The compulsory order of sex/gender desire to p. 12 end of the second paragraph "Constraint is thus built into what that language constitutes as the imaginable domain of gender," Gender Trouble, Feminism and the Subversion of Identity,

Gender Trouble Feminism and the Subversion of Identity by Judith Butler p.8-12.pdf

  • hooks, b. (1992)excerpt from The Oppositional Gaze: Black Female Spectators p. 115- end of page 118,Black Looks: Race and Representation, Boston, South End Press.

Step 2. Identify the mostsignificant sentencein your chosen extract. That is, the sentence you think encapsulates the argument, or is most important to the argument in your view.

Step 3. Please write a short paragraph comprising only three sentences. These three sentences must in turn:

  1. Quote the sentence you have chosen

  2. Articulate why it is the most significant sentence in the article.

  3. Articulate how it has changed the way you think about the topic the reading addresses. Remember, this needn't agree with the article. This sentence might form a 'jumping off point' for a critical reading of the extract.

Step 4. Write a paragraph situating the sentence within the authors broader argument and justifying why it encapsulates this argument.

Step 5. Write a paragraph that expands on how the sentence and the broader argument it contains changed the way you think about a particular topic.

You will be assessed on:

  • Choice of key sentence from appropriate extract

  • Clear articulation of why that is the key sentence

  • Clear articulation of why that sentence changed the way you think about a topic.

  • Spelling, presentation and grammar
