Diversity at the workplace refers to the workforce in a company which includes people of different age, gender, race, caste, languages, education, abilities, knowledge, etc. Today the organizations are taking various steps to promote diversity (Hebl, M.R., and Avery, D.R., 2012) at the workplace. Some of the steps taken by the organizations include:
· Creating a holiday calendar
with cultural diversity: The organizations are trying to provide holidays on the occasions that are important to different cultures. It is celebrating the importance of different festivals in different cultures. It motivates the employees by seeing it company’s respect for diversified culture and people
· Organizing different events and activities: These days organizations are considering setting up events and activities once or twice a month or weekly that celebrate different employee cultures. They can take part in different activities to learn about the diversified cultures. This is useful as each one of them has respect towards a different culture and also diversity is promoted at the workplace.
· Introducing diversity-friendly policies: Companies are trying to introduce those policies in the organization that are diversity-friendly. They review the current policies to include a prospect of diversity in it. It includes taking into consideration all the employees and their culture, religion, caste, etc. Examples may include leave options, choice of meals, recreational activities, etc.
· Building diversified teams:The organizations are trying to build and createinternal teams that involve diversity. It is beneficial asit welcomes different ideas, opinions, thoughts, etc. Diversified teams working together will result in achieving the goals of the organization in an effective and efficient manner promoting diversity in the workplace.
The steps taken by organizations to promote diversity are very effective (Chuang, S.F., 2013). It results in greater engagement of the organization, reduction in employee turnover, improved reputation, and image of the company, increased innovation and creativity in the workplace, leads to quick and easy solving of problems and decision-making, etc.
Once the research was carried out by Deloitte where they considered the views of 1,550 employees working at large companies in Australia. The results showed that increased engagement of employees at the workplace is only due to diversity and importance given to them. Hence, we can conclude that promoting diversity in the workplace is effective and important.

For any employee to work efficiently the attitude of the supervisor plays a very important role as the due to the increasing work pressure, the employees tend not to work effectively in a stressful environment. The most important thing for an employee in a job is to receive the compensation for the work done by the employee which they will receive at the end of the month. But the behaviour of the supervisor and the working environment which is created at the office will bring out a better result in the quality of the work. The supervisor should be cautious enough to not hurt the employees feelings to the extent that the employee looses interest in the same (Largo-Wight, E., Chen, W.W., Dodd, V. and Weiler, R., 2011). The supervisor should keep the following points in mind for maintaining the appropriate behaviour for making a stress free environment for the employees:-
· The supervisor should maintain a correct balance between being strict and being friendly with the employees. If the supervisor becomes overfriendly, the employees will take him for granted and being too serious will restrict the employee to them.
· The supervisor should allow short breaks in between to relieve the employees from the stress of working for continuous long periods.
· The supervisor should be a good communicator and should be approachable to the employees so that the employees feel enough comfortable to share their thoughts.
· The supervisor should make the employees feel valued and appreciate the work done by the employees.
