Sonia is a nurse practitioner student completing her final clinical in an outpatient primary care setting. She is caring for Lea, a 42-year-old woman who visited the office last week for ongoing fatigue and generalized weakness. Sonia conducted several blood tests on Lea (called a panel of laboratory tests) and told her she would get back to her with the results. Sonia’s supervisor concurred with the laboratory tests Sonia requested but also added a human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test to the panel to rule out pregnancy as the cause of her symptoms. Sonia accessed the laboratory work via the computerized system and found all of Lea’s laboratory test results were negative with the exception of elevated hCG levels. Sonia picks up the phone and dials Lea’s number to inform her of the results. As she prepares to leave a message, she hesitates. Why do you think Sonia hesitated? What should Sonia say?
