Sometimes a phase is added to help the client maintain the gains from the intervention when the practitioner is about to terminate the service. The maintenance phase is distinct from the intervention itself, since it focuses on teaching the client to perform the whole intervention himself or herself without the practitioner. Notations of the maintenance phase could include: A-B-M (maintenance); A-B-C (where C is a new intervention used as a maintenance program); A-B1 - B2 (if the intervention’s intensity is modified to focus on maintenance); or A-B (if B somehow includes helping the client learn to maintain the gains made during the intervention). (See the discussion of Maintenance Phase and Follow-Up Plans, later in this chapter.)
