Some of the Parthenon marble was ground to make lime, and bits of statuary were broken off (Jackson 1992). In 1800, one of the world’s most perfect buildings was in a sorry state. Elgin initially proposed that the British government finance a survey of the art of the Acropolis as a resource for British art.
