Some ancient and medieval rationalists claimed that the notion of a vacuum was rationally absurd and, hence, that it was impossible for one to exist. As the result of experiments, scientists eventually discovered that vacuums are possible, and we can create nearly perfect vacuums with our technology. Does this discovery cast doubt on the rationalists’ claims that reason alone can tell us about reality?
