Solar System’s Location in Milky Way. In this exercise, you can use Starry Night Enthusiast™ to find the solar system’s location in the Milky Way. You will need a ruler. Select Favourites Stars Sun in Milky Way from the menu. Use the Location Scroller (hold down the Shift key and mouse button while moving the mouse) to adjust the view so that the Milky Way appears face on. Make a sketch to scale of the image of the Milky Way on the screen, labeling the position of the solar system and indicating its distance from the center of the Milky Way. (Hint: See Figure 15- 11.) On your sketch, measure the distance from the edge of the visible Galaxy to its center and then determine the ratio of the distance of the solar system from the galactic center to the visible galactic radius. Be careful not to damage the screen if you trace from it or measure from it. (A soft felt pen works well when tracing onto transparent film or tracing paper over the screen.)
