1. Use three approaches to try to understand the following situation. Make sure that you are clear as to how each approach would view the situation differently. How would a structural functionalist view a marriage relationship? How would a conflict theorist view marriage relationship and how would an interactionist view a marriage relationship?
Marriage is a legal social contract recognized in society between two individuals based traditionally on sexual relationship while implying permanence of the union.
Marriage ceremony is the ceremony where these two people get married with the defined rituals of society and law. The structural functionalist views marriage as macro prospect of holding individuals together so as to make it work. They focus on the vital major functions affecting all the marriages mostly. They ignore the micro elements whereas the conflict theorists studies the differences in people along with the problems and disputes caused because of these differences. They also focus on broad picture looking at major trends of society acceptance along with role of different ethnic groups. In this theory, basically men are viewed as superior to women creating conflict as men tries to maintain power and women attempts to seize more power. On the other hand an interactionist view marriage relationship as close up micro level prospective where in point of view of individual in situation counts along with what he/she thinks and communicates based on society. They study people’s action and communication based on society. Each and every theory helps in understanding society and the marriage relationship with varying prospective however, together they offer a complete picture.

Socialization is a process in which people are generally taught so as to live in society with all values as a proficient member. The process of socialization starts from breath and continue still the end of one’s life where in the ways are described such that people can understand the norms of society along with expectations in order to accept beliefs of society and be aware of the values of society. Elements of socialization include Investigation, socialization, Maintenance, Re-socialization and remembrance. Social environment tends to change what we are as human infants are born without any culture or societal norms and needs to be transformed by teachers, parents and others into social adapt cultural animals. Parents are first social connect for infants and they tend to imbibe values in children by rewards as well as punishments acting as mini society to make child learn norms, behavior and values of a person in society. Schools assist the child in learning subjects and instill the notion of time, competition, cooperation, teamwork, and discipline.  Then comes peer group, which has great influence because of sharing same characteristics as well as being on same stage of socialization making them more influencing. Similarly counter culture as well sub culture helps to make them secular and brings the fear of hell by religion values of society. Race, gender have influence because of shared values and same characteristics just similar to peer group. Internet and television are the mode of media that acts as communication medium influencing the thought process as well as decision making of individual in society. Lastly the work and secondary group, shared goals and interest and objectives helps an individual to learn societal values while making adjustments in one’s behavior and style to fit in particular social environment. As per structural functionalist the process of socialization is coercive that forces an individual to accept the norms and values of society which are agreed upon by all societal members because of the social contract in effect protecting us from one another. This helps to keep the stability as well as balance in society. In contrast to this, the conflict theorists consider socialization as a way or status quo perpetuation because people don’t challenge their own social classes thus not upsetting the existing class of culture.
