The gender prejudice has existed in our society for thousands of years because of the societal norms of not allowing women to step outside their house. However, the gender discrimination will decline and is considerably declining because of the globalization the amalgamation of culture had led to more exposure of women to the working field and hence there is significant reduction in gender prejudice and in future with more amalgamation between both the genders will led to disappear of gender prejudice (Brinkman et al., 2016).
2. Please define racism.
Racism is a prejudice or kind of discrimination that is against an individual or community or against any institution or group of people. This discrimination is done on the basis of ethnic group or place of origin (Virdee and McGeever).
A. Why do you think racism exists in our society?
The racism exists in our society because there are many countries with cultural prejudice, which had led to maintain a radicalized society. Secondly, there are different preferences and selection of people in today’s world. Lastly, the manner in which the racism had embedded in our society from centuries had resulted into the existence of racism in our society in present world (Perez, 2017).
B. What are some of the causes of racism and are there any solutions that would help to end racism?
Any person is not aware of this term racism from their childhood, however the environment they grew up if promotes racism then it is inculcated in the child’s mind and that is carried towards the rest of their life. There are many societies, which still carries radical thought process, which has resulted into the existence of racism.
The process through which the racism can be reduced is to provide education to the children is right from the early age, which will teach them equality and respect for all. As a person, we must promote to accept everyone irrespective of their background and race and thus it will spread more following of ending racism.
C. How is racism similar to sexism and how is it different?
Racism and sexism can be defined similar as in many societies the women are considered as weaker or inferior sex. They are not provided with the equal rights and opportunities with respect to the male peers.
However, racism and sexism can be termed different because when racism is done it is done against any race or community. Then in that situation both male and female are discriminated.
D. Discuss how a conflict theorist would explain racism and compare and contrast that to how a structural functionalist would view racism.
The similarities between conflict and functionalist theorist are that the conflict theorist will explain racism based on gender, social class, education, race and ethnicity. The functionalist theorist will see the racism based on race and ethnicity.
The difference between the conflict and functionalist theorist are that conflict theorist believe that racism is based on many factors such as gender, race, education and many more. However, functionalist theorist believes that racism is based on the particular community or race of people (Rodwell, 2017).
