Socialization helps people learn to function successfully in their social worlds. How does the process of socialization occur? How do we learn to use the objects of our society’s material culture? How do we come to adopt the beliefs, values, and norms that represent its non-material culture?



Answer:This learning takes place through interaction with various
agents of socialization,
like peer groups and families, plus both formal and informal social institutions. Social Group Agents Social groups often provide the first experiences of socialization. Families, and later peer groups, communicate expectations and reinforce norms. People first learn to use the tangible objects of material culture in these settings, as well as being introduced to the beliefs and values of society.

In the golden words of Greek philosopher, Aristotle, "Man is by nature a social animal" which essentially implies that a human being is inherently social in nature. Perhaps, person who is not social is either beneath the attention of individual or may be much more than human. In life, society always precedes individuals meaning man can’t survive alone. Indeed, socialization is a process of entire lifetime of disseminating and inheriting norms, ideology and customs that provide individual with required skills and abilities essential for participating in one's society. We learn the process of socialization ever since we are infant of few months and acquire the talent essential to perform as an operational functioning part of the society. Thus, socialization is a process that continues throughout person's life. We learn socialization as a child, we observe how our elders communicate with each other and how they react to certain stimulus. Also, as a child we grasp the values and actions appropriately to individuals as member of specific culture. This is also called as primary socialization that comes from immediate friends and family. There is another way by the virtue of which we learn socialization is by observing the behaviour and attitude within a smaller group in the larger society.
