Introduction
Australia is the home of multiple cultures and people from different cultures come in contact with each other in day-to-day tasks of daily lives. The aboriginals have different cultural views to that of majority of the Australian population, keeping their distinctive identity. The immigrants also visit Australia bring with them different cultures. However, due to discriminative attitude towards immigrants and aboriginals, racism takes place, which influences event the healthcare sector in Australia, termed as health racism. The health racism takes place not based on discrimination, but also retains complicated issues that remain hidden from the perceptible surface. Therefore the current essay discusses and analysis the issue of health racism in Australia. The health issues prevailing in a country depends on the lifestyle, climate and culture. In Australia, it is seen that the issues of dementia, obesity, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental health and diabetes mellitus are the prevailing and widely seen health issues (National Health and Medical Research Council, 2017). In case of obesity, it is found that 61% of the adults in Australia suffer from obesity and this has led to health issues such as asthma and cardiovascular disease. In case of cardiovascular disease, it is noticed that 37% of women in Australia die every year due cardiovascular disease. The deaths in most cases tend to be premature. In case of diabetes, 11% of the total population of Australia are affected by the disease in comparison to 4% of the non-indigenous population. The non-indigenous people in Australia, namely, the immigrants have health issues of their own, however, the percentage of disease occurrences are very limited and hence does not cater for urgent attention (The Department of Health, 2011).
The healthcare facilities in Australia are supported by private and public funding, in which the government plays significant roles. In Australia universal, tax finance based and national insurance covers the health issues of public. In order to provide easy access to healthcare the Australian government pays the medical bills however, as there is no fixed bounds on personal fees impositions, the medical practitioners have the liberty of charging extra money from the care seekers, making the effect of government funded treatment undermining and lack lustred. In case of public hospitals, the medical services and care is free and is funded and managed by the government. In case of private healthcare services, the government imposes penalty over people who do not take insurance cover for medical purpose.
