Sustainable Development and Wind Energy
Sustainable development and wind energy
Introduction
Wind can be considered as a clean, free, easily available renewable source of
energy and is a form of solar energy. Wind power or wind energy is the process by which wind can be used to generate electricity. Owusu (2016) discussed that the process in simple words as - that the kinetic energy in the wind can be converted into mechanical energy by the wind turbines. Then, the mechanical energy can be converted to electricity using a generator. The mechanical power produced in the process can directly be used for other work like pumping water. Wind turbines all over the world capture the power of the wind and convert it into electrical energy. This is a source of power generation that plays an important role to power the world.
Basics of Wind Energy
Wind can be caused due to many reasons like – the uneven heating of the atmosphere of Earth, the variations in the surface of the Earth and also the rotation of the Earth. The flow pattern of the wind is influenced by everything from mountains, water-bodies to vegetation of the area. Wind turbines function by converting the wind energy to electricity by the rotation of propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor in turn turns the drive shaft that turns an electric generator and electricity is produced. Three main factors affect the amount of energy that can be produced by the rotation of the wind turbines i.e. the speed of wind, the density of wind and the swept area as mentioned by Ali (2016).
History
The history of wind power being used as a source of energy dates back to 3100 BC when it was used for sailing vessels. As early as the 10th century AD, the windmills...
