Since the establishment of the French Academy and discussions about the hierarchy of genres and color vs. line in the 17th century, artists have been debating the question of “What is art?” in one way or another. Discuss the way that artists of the ancien regime (i.e. from Louis XIV to the French Revolution in 1789), the 19th century, and the 20th century each defined, questioned, and/or complicated the definition of ‘art’—or what art should be. You might consider questions about subject matter, style/form, the creative process, etc.
Your essay should include:
I want to include
Nicolas Poussin, Et in Arcadia Ego, ca. 1655, French Classicism
Jean-Honoré Fragonard, The Swing, 1766, French Rococo
Gustave Courbet, The Stone Breakers, 1849, French Realism (depicts something outisde of the french academy criteria)
Édouard Manet, Le Déjeuner sur L’Herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass), 1863, French Realism
Also use refer the article attached to discuss how French art evolved since the French Acadmeny and how those pieces relate.
