Since the earlier version of this chapter was published in 2007, there has been extensive research on the structure of the international Internet and the World Wide Web. Lee, Monge, Bar, and Matei (2007) examined the international telecommunication network and found that less economically developed countries, those peripheral nations with lower telecommunications status, significantly increased in their connections to each other, indicating the emergence of cohesive and interconnected subgroups of nations within global telecommunications.
