By 2022, there are estimated to be four million Australians aged 65 and more, with the number rising significantly over next decade. The population is likely to rise further, reaching 8.8 million in 2027. Though some people may appear elderly in their 50s, others may appear old in their 70s. As a result of population ageing, the country's working population is declining. The population of Australia is ageing. According to predictions, the number of Australians aged 85 and up will rise from 2.0 percent of the population in 2018-19 to 3.7 percent in 2058, representing an increase of around 1 million people in this age group, adding demand to an already overburdened system.
