Edit Sequence Analysis Assignment Sheet SHOT & EDIT ANALYSIS OF A SEQUENCE FROM ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER (10 points) STEP ONE: Choose a sequence of 3 or more consecutive shots in Pedro Almodóvar’s All About My Mother. (Note: 3 is fine; I suggest not using more than 5. More shots is not necessarily better; choosing a significant sequence of shots is.) You will write about the shots individually and how they work together to convey meaning to the audience. STEP TWO: Complete this WORKSHEET for the EDIT ANLAYSIS 1. Description of Edit Sequence a. Title, director, date of film b. Briefly describe what is seen (subject, action) in each shot of the edit sequence. i. SHOT A – ii. SHOT B – iii. SHOT C – iv. SHOT D – (optional) v. SHOT E – (optional) c. Identify any elements of cinematic form involved in each shot of the edit sequence—camera movement (type, speed, direction); significant techniques with regard to visual composition, sound, color, special effects. Also identify any special editing relationship between shots (parallel edit, etc.) i. SHOT A – ii. SHOT B – iii. SHOT C – iv. SHOT D – (optional) v. SHOT E – (optional) STEP THREE: Write a paper (500 words minimum) analyzing the edit sequence. Since this is an edit example, you should analyze the nature of the edited relationship itself between these particular shots. Examine the nature of the relationships (narrative, time, space, etc.) between the separate shots of the edit. How does each shot depend on the other for meaning? How do the 3 or more shots combine through editing to create a new meaning or more effective impression on the viewer? Why has the director chosen this particular cinematic treatment to convey meaning or content? Relate the elements of cinematic form you’ve identified above in the DESCRIPTION OF EDIT SEQUENCE to narrative content (theme, plot, action, characterization, mood, etc.). NOTE: The worksheet is to help you build your paper. Do not submit the worksheet. Your paper does not need to capture all the information in the worksheet. For example, if the angle or the lighting or the shot are not distinctive, they need not be highlighted.
