Semester 1, 2019 EDU10002 Understanding Language and Literacy Assessment 2: Presentation and rationale Time limit + 4 minute video (+/- 10%) Word limit: + 1000 words (+/- 10%) Weighting: 40% Due date: 11:59pm Friday 19th April 2019 Assessment context Addressing the needs of language development in the early childhood and primary years requires the integration of a number of different areas of knowledge, including an awareness of theories of literacy development, appropriate teaching methods, the features of the learning environment, and understanding the Australian educational context. This assessment will allow you to demonstrate your understanding in all of these areas through the design of a presentation and a rationale that describes learning experiences through which children’s language and literacy development are supported. You will also be able to work independently to develop communication skills in the important area of oral presentation. Related learning outcomes This task is assessing your ability to demonstrate that you meet the criteria for the following unit learning outcomes: 1. Describe key concepts with regard to language and literacy in Australian education contexts. 4. Demonstrate appropriate communication skills. Assessment Details This assessment is in two parts. Part A requires you to work individually to produce an oral presentation which will be submitted as a recorded video on a YouTube channel that you have set up under your name. Part B requires to work individually to produce a written rationale that is related to your oral presentation. Note, the written rationale is not a transcript of your video presentation. Part A: The video presentation (4 minutes) The imagined audience for your presentation will be the board of committee of an early childhood centre or primary school. Your video presentation will respond to the following question: How can children’s oral language development be supported within the Australian early years education context? Your presentation should include: 1. An introduction which provides an overview of the material within the presentation 2. A description and discussion of: • A description of children’s oral language development from birth to 8 years of age. • The key features of the learning environment that support oral language development. • An explanation of the Australian early years educational context either in early childhood contexts or the primary school context. • An example of one learning experience or lesson that will support oral language development for a chosen age group between birth to 8 years of age. This must include both a description of the learning experience or lesson, the context within which it would be delivered (i.e. in an early learning centre or primary school) and the teaching methods that would support it. It must also include descriptions of the extensions and adaptions of the learning experience to support diverse learners. 3. A conclusion which sums up the content of the presentation. Part B: The written rationale (1000 words +/- 10%) Using the learning experience or lesson which you have shared in your video presentation, you are required to discuss why the role of the educator is crucial in supporting children’s oral language development within the Australian early years education context. Your discussion points must be supported by evidence linked to the emergent literacy theory, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) or the Australian Curriculum, scholarly sources and other relevant sources. Please note that the written rationale is not a transcript of your video presentation. Submission Details 1. You must record your presentation on video and upload it onto a YouTube channel that you have set up in your name. Your video must be set to ‘unlisted’ so that the assessors can access your video for marking purposes. Do not set it to ‘private’ as we will not be able to view your video. 2. On Turnitin, you must submit a cover page, your written rationale and your reference list in using a word document. On the cover page, you must include your name, student ID number, the name of your lecturer/tutor, the day and time of your workshop that you are registered in and the URL link to your video presentation. In following, you will include your written rationale. At the end of your document, you will start your reference list on a new page and it must be formatted using the APA referencing style. Note that the reference list will not be included in the word count. 3. Your work on the word document must be presented using a size 12 font and 1.5 line spacing. Headings and sub-headings can be used to separate sections in the word document but it is not necessary. Assessment criteria You will be assessed on the following criteria: 1. The depth and relevance of the components in your presentation. 2. The depth and relevance of the components in the written rationale. 3. The correct use of relevant conventions of English: spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax. 4. The correct use of the APA referencing style. EDU10002 Semester 1 2019 Assessment 2 Marking Rubric Your work submission will be assessed according to the following marking rubric: Criteria Fail Pass (50%-59%) Credit (60-69%) Distinction (70-79%) High Distinction (80-1000%) 1.
