Select two questions from the list below and provide a detailed answer to each question in your initial post. Be sure to indicate the number of the questions you selected in front of your answers. In addition, respond to two peers' initial posts who answered different questions than the ones you selected.

These are “think” questions; you will not find a single, simple (or perfect) answer to them in the book. They are designed for you to use what you read in Chapter 14 to think through the issues. Personal feelings and opinions will often come into play but be sure that your answer is grounded in our scholarly study of the subject and that your answer demonstrates that you have read and understood the chapter.




  1. The authors discuss how businesses subject their employees to psychological and drug testing. Businesses alsocontrol employees by monitoring telephone calls and email and Internet use. How well do these techniques work to control employees? What kind of control does it achieve? How do businesses benefit from this control? Do employees benefit? How would, or do,you feel being screened and monitored like this?

  2. Do you think that profits ever become more important than human life and safety? What are some possible examples from the chapter? Can you think of others?

  3. The authors discuss the substandard work conditions of sweatshops and thatmost sweatshops occur in the garment industry. Doyou know ifany of the clothing you own or are wearing comes from sweatshops? Is there a way to avoid purchasing clothing made in sweatshops? What is the dilemma American consumers face if they want not to contribute to unfair labor practices, in this case sweat shops?

  4. What is the purpose of unions? How has the influence ofunions changed over the last 100 years or so? Would you rather work in a unionized or nonunionized job? Why?

  5. Unemployment is commonly believed to serve a necessary purpose in the economy. Explain how this may be true, even though it creates a problem. Do you agree that unemployment is functional?

  6. What do you think it would feel like to lose your job and your income? What do we have invested in our jobs? What are jobs about? Are jobs only about money or is there more to work than that?
