  1. Select and describe one example of antibiotic resistanceorpesticide resistance. Be specific in your choice.

    • Describe the background for your choice of resistance. Include details about the disease or pest and the established control strategies. How have we used antibiotics (to treat a particular disease), or pesticides (to protect from a pest); and how has this changed?

  2. Explain how the resistant trait evolved based on principles of natural selection and evolution of a trait at the population level.

  3. For your specific example, what are the consequences of resistance in terms of human health or crop loss / damage?

  4. What steps can be taken to prevent or slow down the evolution of antibioticorpesticide resistance? Do you think we will succeed in doing so? Why or why not?

You will find that Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is described in the case study and antibiotic resistance is used as an example of directional selection. Read through those pages of the eBook (Chapter 7: starting on page 134). 1. Antibiotis resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococci):
Before some decades all strains of pneumococci were susceptible to antibiotic pe
nicillin. But at
the end of 1990’s 25% of these strains became resistance to penicillin. Now –a-days
approximately all strain become resistance to penicillin.
Streptococcus pneumoniae causes several infectious diseases like
 Infection of respiratory tract, lung which cause pneumonia.
 Infection of ear, which cause otitis media.
 Infection of lining of brain which cause meningitis.
 Infection of blood causes bacteremia.
Control measure:
Use of antibiotic is the primary control of S. pneumonia. Although most of the strain became
antibiotis resistance, use of powerful antibiotics would be beneficial. Now vaccines are also
available for children and adults. Vaccine (PCV-7, Prevnar®); (PPV-23, Pneumovax®) etc are
used.
Other measure of prevention is to be conscious about the transfer of disease through other
diseased people. Everybody should avoid close contact of diseased people.
Mechanism of action of antibiotic:
Penicillin is a βlactem which acts by inhibiting the synthesis of essential component of cell wall:
the peptidoglycan by inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).PBS is a group of
membrane-associated cytoplasm proteins involved in the assembly of peptidoglycan.
Peptidoglycan provides a protective mesh around the bacteria and inhibition of peptidoglycan
results in inhibition...
