Introduction
In the modern times, the aviation industry provides quick and convenient transport facilities to passengers all across the globe. This i
ndustry had faced threats from terrorist acts as well as the negligence in the security systems. Terrorists have always targeted airlines as it involves multiple governments and can gain huge publicity and spread the terror on a wider scale. While travelling by air, the airline passengers face the challenges of aircraft hijacks and other forms of terrorist attacks. The report would highlight the case of 9/11 where an Islamic terror group attacked US through air. The purpose and the objectives of the conduction of the terrorist act would also be discussed in the report. Analysis of the policies or the regulations that were developed in relation to the aviation industry would be incorporated in the report as well. A discussion regarding the status of the policies in the recent times would be included at the end of the report.
Background information of the terrorist act
The 9/11 or commonly known as the September attack was conducted by an Islamic terror group named Al-Quaida on 11th of September in the year 2001. The terrorist act caused huge damage to life as well as property in the United States, with the death count increasing to 2977 civilians. The damage caused accounted to more than 10 billion dollars. Even following the terrorist act, the citizens of the US have struggled with life threatening respiratory diseases (Leese, 2016). The terrorist group Al-Quaida had hijacked 4 US airplanes that were travelling to Los Angeles. American Airlines Flight and United Airlines Flight were amongst the 4 airplanes that were hijacked and were used to attack the North and the South Towers of the World Trade Centre. The 2 massive towers contained 110 floors and collapsed within a time frame of 1 hours and 42 minutes. The 3rd hijacked plane was used by the terror group to attack the Pentagon which is the head office of the Ministry of Defense of the US. The west side of the building was destructed, though it did not collapse fully. The fourth airplane was to attack Washington DC, but it crashed in a field near Pennsylvania as the onboard passengers had countered the hijackers.
Motives behind the terrorist act and its effects
The September 11 terrorist attack carried out in the United States by a group of 19 hijackers who belonged to the Islamic group of Al-Quaida, is considered to be one of the deadliest terrorist acts in the history of mankind. As stated by Ouellet, Bouchard & Hart (2017), the 9/11 terrorist act was primary based on religious motives. The leader of the Islamic terror group Osama Bin Laden propagated that the main motive of the group was to restore the moral order that is disrupted by the western influence and globalization. Osama Bin Laden knew that it was not possible to attack on the strongest economy in the world via military forces. So the Islamic group planned to destruct the economy of the country by attacking through air. Osama Bin Laden had signed a fatwa or a legal opinion that stated that the Muslims should kill the American civilians as an act of protest and to free the Al-Aqsa mosque situated in Jerusalem and the Holy Mosque located in Makka from the rule of the English people. The terrorist group performed the act in order create a terror in the minds of the American civilians so that the English people flee away from any Muslim land situated all across the globe. As opined by Osama, their creator Allah had summoned to protest against any oppression against the followers of Islam and therefore the terrorist act acted as a protest against the ill treatment of the Americans against the Muslims residing in the United States. The terrorist group created videos in order to instigate the Muslims residing in the foreign country to unite with all other Islamic followers and protest against United States. The impact created by aviation terrorism including activities such as hijacking, bombarding, and so on is much more intense than that of any other kind of attack on the civilians. It is one of the greatest means incorporated by the terror groups to gain attention of the media, general public, as well as the government. The hijackers knew that air planes is the general mode of communication used by the citizens of United States and therefore the Islamic terror group targeted the aviation industry (Baird, 2018).
The aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attack resulted in the development of strict American policies in order to combat any kind of terror acts. A new governmental body named Department of Homeland Security was formed by the US Government in order to safe guard the nation against the terrorist attacks. The safety strategies and policies designed by the department are...
