Introduction
Terrorists have recurrently used the commercial aviation to attack the integral system. The Airports, being publicly accessible places have been identified as soft targets for the terrorist attacks worldwide. The attacks executed from the ground installations are planned violently along with the other methods of attack like sabotage, hijack and suicide missions. The targets can be boarding gates, check in counters, parking lots, buildings and vehicles.
Three of the similar aviation terrorist attacks took place in a series at two airports Brussels and Istanbul on the morning of 22 March 2016. Three terrorists reportedly having suicide bombs arrived in taxi and attacked the international airport, opening aggressive fire and exploding their devices. 41 people were killed at the Istanbul airport, and more than 250 people got injured. ISIS terrorist Organisation (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) took responsibility of this attack. This Organisation encourages unity for many aims and is largely made of unmarried unemployed men who have already a family member working for the organization. It offers many benefits to the people who join it in terms of social support, funds and security. The Organisation had already given warnings of attack in Turkey prior to this incident. In Brussels and Istanbul attacks, the suicide bombers carried the bomb shells in suitcases. The 2 explosions took place in check-in rows at the airport. The CCTV footage of the incident could easily identify the terrorists.
The report will analyze the key incidents happened during the terrorist attacks in Brussels and Istanbul in 2016, will evaluate the impact of incident, motives behind the attack and aftermath changes in regulations and policies within the Aviation security system of the country.
Actions Aftermath
Just within one and a half hour of the attack, the airport area was isolated by the police. The police identified the suspects and the area where the grenade was hidden. The authority collected 15 kg Acetone peroxide, 151 liters Acetone, a nail bomb and 30 liters of hydrogen peroxide (BBC News, 2016). The police conducted raids and searches across the city increasing the security level. The terminal buildings were evacuated and the air traffic was halted to route towards the airport. All the public transport was stopped; railway stations were closed and evacuated. The taxi used to carry the people across the locations free of cost.
After the attacks, the National Security Council elevated the level of alert in the country as the highest one. The Nuclear Power Plants of the country were also evacuated. Border checks were performed temporarily across the major crossings. The government declared 3 days of national mourning. The Ambulances lined up at the airport after the incident happened.
The Ataturk Airport of Istanbul was observed as a soft and vulnerable target for the terrorists. Even though there are 3 X-Ray scanners at the airport terminal, there is limited security check for the cars.
Ataturk Airport of Istanbul is 11th busiest airport in the world serving more than 61.3 million passengers in 2016. It has two terminals for the passengers: one international and the other domestic. Istanbul has witnessed many terrorist attacks...
