Select a human cell that secretes one of the following proteins:insulin, amylase,an antibody or mucus. Describe how this protein is produced.Reference must be made to:

  • organelles working together to make and secrete the protein. (In-depth discussion of protein synthesis not required) (LO1. AC 1.1)

  • the structure of the cell membrane

  • transportation of various substances across the membrane involved in the production of this protein.(LO1. AC 1.2)

An antibody or immunoglobulin (Ig) is a glycoprotein that is made by activated B cells c
alled plasma cells. Certain antibodies serve as antigen receptor (BCR) on the B cell surface. After antigen capture by the membrane- bound immunoglobulin and B cell activation, B cells differentiate into plasma cells, which secrete a soluble form of antibody that circulates through blood stream to recognize and bind the antibody that induced its synthesis. Antibodies are present in the blood serum, tissue fluids, and mucosal surfaces of vertebrate animals. There are five classes of human antibodies. The classes differ from each other in molecular size, structure, charge , amino acid composition, and carbohydrate content.
B cells are produced by stem cells in the bone marrow. B cells must be activated by a specific antigen to continue mitosis, replicate, and differentiate into antibody secreting plasma cells. Prior to stimulation by antigen, B cells express genes that code for a special form of antibody that is attached to their cell membrane and oriented so that the part of the antibody that binds to the antigen is facing outward, away from the cell. These cell surfaces, transmembrane antibodies act as receptors for one definite antigen that will trigger that particular B cell. When an antigen is confined by immunoglobulin receptor, the receptor converse this confinement to the nucleus though a signal transduction pathway. On a molecular level, the receptor molecules of immunoglobulin on the surface of B cell link with other proteins known as Ig-α/ Ig-β heterodimer proteins. The transmembrane immunoglobulins together with the heterodimer protein complexes are called B-cell receptors (BCRs).
There are approximately 50, 0000 BCRs present on the surface of B cell. Each individual human B cell carries BCRs particular for approximately 10^13...
