Assignment #5 America the Doomed: Fact or Fiction? Amanda Johnston 03 September 2012 Professor Julie Davenport ENG 215 – Research and Writing Strayer University AMERICA THE DOOMED: FACT OR FICTION? Introduction The United States is face to face with the most dangerous energy crisis it has ever encountered; one that threatens democracy and the American way of life. It is paramount for the U.S. to wean itself of its dependency to non-renewable energy resources (fossil fuels) because it will improve both American’s health and their lives, vamping U.S. technologies will provide economically beneficial sources of renewable energy, and U.S. national security will be improved. The U.S. must focus on obtaining new and innovative methods of renewable energy resources before it is crushed under the thumb of the foreign energy market. History The U.S. has an impressive history of massive energy consumption and energy dependency. History shows in the late 1500’s, the U.S. was firmly entrenched in importing coal; consuming nearly 108,000 tons until the 1800's (GreenEnergyChoice, 2012). The internal combustion engine transformed the U.S. in the 17th century, amidst the Industrial Revolution, and ensured non-renewable energy resources became common (Nonrenewableenergysources, 2011). The 20th century witnessed petroleum and natural gas quickly taking the lead as principle fuels for transportation, heating, agriculture and manufacturing (EIA, 2007). The U.S. consumes energy on a noteworthy scale. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the United States is responsible for 20% of the world’s energy consumption. You may ask, “Where does this energy come from?” The answer lies far away in distant lands: the U.S. depends largely on foreign trade for energy. 45% of the petroleum (crude oil and petroleum products) that the U.S. consumed in 2011 was derived from net imports (imports minus exports). Overview Once a superpower and world leader, now the U.S. is...
