Activity 3: Macronutrient and Micronutrient Needs in Various Diets
For each of the diets below, you will need to identify ways to balance an individual’s protein, carbohydrate, and lipid needs. Be sure to note which diets may have trouble meeting which macronutrients, and which diets may have trouble exceeding which macronutrients. In addition, consider major micronutrients such as vitamins (such as folate, B12, K, C, E & A) and minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, iron & zinc). You will need to utilize chapters 4-8 for this assignment, so you may have to read ahead a little! Chapters 7 and 8 have very nice bar graphs for essential vitamins and minerals.
NOTE: Use the definitions on page 156 & 164 of the textbook to determine the definitions of the various vegetarian diets below.
No Restrictions Diet
Macronutrient concerns and advantages:
A diet with no restrictions means you can have whatever you want to have. A diet with no restrictions will help you to balance your macronutrients if you eat healthy and balanced. However, in case of no restrictions, one can have food according to his choice. If he likes to eat fast food, then his fat content might get disturbed or if he likes to eat high protein or sweets then his protein and carbohydrate level might get disturbed. So, it is recommended to have variety of food and that too in limited amount.
Lack of Macronutrient may result in fatigue, malnutrition, kwashiorkor etc. Similarly higher intake of macronutrient is also not good for health for e.g., higher intake of fat causes cardiovascular diseases.
Micronutrient concerns and advantages:
Micronutrients are those which our body needs in very small amount. In case of no restriction diet, one can also disbalance his micronutrient level if he/she is not focusing on the nutrient level of their diet. Deficiency of micronutrient may cause many diseases for example Vitamin A deficiency causes night blindness, deficiency of vitamin C causes Scurvy etc.
Ways to balance Macronutrient needs:
There are certain ways through which one can balance his macronutrient needs:
· By including variety of food in diet
· Avoiding or limiting processed food
· To balance protein, one should include dairy, eggs, meat etc. in his diet
· To balance carbohydrates one should include fruits, whole grains, rice etc. in his diet
· To balance fat content one should include nuts, cheese, butter etc. in their diet. Avoid processed food as they may increase the level of saturated fat
