Introduction
I choose this negotiation because research on considering the ubiquity of competitive sports in contemporary culture, the study of sports exchanges during the crisis has become more and more valuable. The practical value of examining these crisis papers from both theoretical and practical levels allowing the former to enrich the latter is necessary for more successful processing. This paper attempts to propose a practical model for effective communication for the sports industry such as the NFL. This case study examines the NFL public relations crisis after the
regular referee has stopped. Using the context model of PR, including occasional press releases and memos with rhetoric apologies, both defending their image and demonizing referees, the NFL also failed to appreciate the cultural value of their products, the opinions of fans and the power of fans. The media thus undermines its image. The complexity of this situation requires a rich blend of two-way symmetry and media relationship patterns to facilitate meaningful engagement between the NFL and its public. In 2012, the National Football League (NFL) faced a serious blow - the National Football Referee Association (NFRA) is on strike and effectively stopped its normal operations (Lewis & Proffitt, 2013).
The history between the sides in the negotiation you selected
The 2012 NFL referee lockout was a labor dispute between the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referee Association, resulting in the use of replacement officers in the third week of the 2012 NFL season. After the two sides, the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referee Association did not reach a consensus on the collective bargaining agreement, the work stoppage began in June 2012. On September 26, 2012, after increasing criticism of the NFL and the performance of the replacement official, an agreement was reached to end the shutdown.
As of June 2012, the union and official unions have not yet reached an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, so they cannot resolve labor disputes. On June 4, 2012, the National Football League announced that it would begin recruiting replacement officers (Rome, 2012). After being suspended, the NFL Referee Accused the Alliance plan to keep them locked instead of negotiating new contracts (Lewis & Proffitt, 2013).
Project Evaluation
Chief negotiators (by name) on each side and state their positions
Both Bettman, as well as Fehr, are chief negotiators, and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly played a very active role in the league, while Steve Fehr assisted his brother in the union. Jeremy Jacobs, the possessor of the Boston Bruins and chairman of NHL Board of Directors, made a very strong voice in reducing the player's revenue share because he had been shut down in the year 2004-2005 season. Some players - especially the penguin's Sidney Rosby, Buffalo Cavalry's Ryan Miller and the Chicago Blackhawk's Jonathan Tois - are all present to support the union (Bloch, 2015).
When and where the negotiations began
On September 26, 2012, the National Football League, as well as the National Football League referee association, reached an agreement to end lockout after criticizing the performance of the NFL and the substitute officials (Borden, 2012). This negotiation was assisted through federal mediation and mediation services and was approved by the NFL Referee Association. Carl Johnson, ex-vice president of the National Football League, was announced on December 12, 2012, as the first full-time live game official in the league. The agreement was voted by officials in Dallas, Texas from September 28th to 29th, and must have been approved by 51% of the 121 members of the alliance. On September 29, 2012, the official announced the official approval of a new eight-year contract with the NFL, officially ending the lockout with a vote of 112-5 (Bloch, 2015).
2. Issues/Power
Main issues/barriers that separate each side
At the start of the 2012 football season, there were no regular officials because the NFL was denied for not agreeing to a new agreement on compensation. From June, the downtime continues until the third week of the season, as both sides have taken a deep stance on wages, retirement plans, and full-time civil servants.
From the point of view of the NFL, substantial questions can be summarized as follows: (1) Replacing the current retirement plan of the current Referee with 401K. (2) Employ more full-time officials to replace existing officials who do not meet NFL standards. The position of the referee may also be summarized as follows: (1) Do not touch our retirement benefits. (2) Increase your current salary. (3) We do not need another three employees. 17 (4) If you hire a full-time judge, our salary will be affected.
Since both sides did not reach an agreement before the start of the training, the NFL blocked regular officials but decided to charge a substitute referee service from the bottom of the football to handle the pre-season. I hope the regular football season will begin in the first week of September and the NFL and regular referees will reach an agreement.
Unfortunately, the business brokerage between the NFL and the regular referee fell on Saturday before the start of the Sunday League season, which almost guarantees the possibility of replacing the first week of the game. This incident has led to many concerns in the media. As a Battista, the New York Times reported that in August: "The NFL was thinking about setting up a multidimensional clinic after the last preseason game this year - suggesting that the league is about to stop a regular season but it is a problem with the NFL that it does not realize that football is an American cultural artifact that has almost religious love as European football and therefore accepts access to public relations that is considered The press releases, press releases, and comments express themselves in a harsh tone than to be a national football referee (NFRA) as a partner in the negotiation process, but describes the referees as disproportionate, greedy and opportunistic. two members of the NFL (Gannon, 2004), both from the point of view of the organization both from the point of view of the organization, Ray Anderson says they are ready to use the best and we will not be heavily armed with officials who only think they are irreplaceable. Without them, the game cannot continue. If not, the game is not credible. They have convinced that they believe they are part of the entertainment. Because owners and alliances are doing well, they should be surprised or premium because we can afford them. "However, in the minds of journalists, fans, players and other opinion leaders, NFL's attitude is arrogant throughout the negotiating process.
What is at stake in this negotiation and how it affects the balance of power
The issue of public relations is one of the NFL's credibility and needs and describes this issue as the interests of key stakeholders. Unfortunately, the NFL does not believe public opinion is important in this crisis. He often responds to public criticism of the respect of poor officials in a defensive way: "The host has never been perfect." Existing officials have made great progress and under unprecedented pressure and under enormous pressure, performance is admirable, as we have done in each season (Hoffman 2012), however, the public is not naive, as emphasized by Matthias Kiwanu's crisis, "there is no doubt that the integrity of the game was jeopardized by the absence of regular officials there" (qtd., Hoffman, 2012)).
Again and again, regular judges are exposed in the media and are not considered as problems. After all, they only need to get $ 23 million from the Alliance with annual revenue of $ 9 billion. In the opinion of Battista (in 2012, "players, coaches and fans must adapt to a substitute judge"), the NFL has just made a huge mountain range from a very small pier by accepting an uncompromising attitude and emphasizing that "with last year Difference in order to be in the next "Batista (2012) added:" The alliance is relatively insignificant, the income is $ 9 billion, both sides feel a fair amount of arrogance.
Which side has the most relative bargaining power and why
Overall, the New York Times offers a fairly balanced quote from the NFL players as well as owners. NFL management is dominated by chief negotiator Jeff Pash, spokesperson Greg Aiello and Commissioner Roger Goodell and several other representatives – including the lawyer David Boies, a "liberal-oriented Democrat" Represents the National Basketball...
