In the next discussion board, we will talk about the Crash of 1929 which caused America to face high unemployment, homelessness, and hunger. One thing you may not be aware of is how different the US government viewed financial disasters as compared to the present day. In the 1800s, for example, many politicians felt it was not their place to get directly involved with a financial crisis that brought the closing of banks, unemployment, etc. This laissez faire attitude in government was prevalent in the late 1800s. The attitude was that if some businesses went under, the stronger businesses would survive and eventually the economy would come back into an upswing. However, with the Crash of 1929, things continued to get worse and by 1933, nearly one-quarter of the labor force was out of work. Unemployment took a tremendous personal toll and undermined the traditional authority of the male breadwinner. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration was the first in US history to involve government agencies and pass legislation to provide direct intervention and relief. You may have also noticed that some of these government agencies are still around today. Did you know we are one of the few countries in the world that provides a pension for people older than 65, provide assistance to those with a disability or work-related accident, or provide financial aid to help farmers sustain a living? Also, while FDR pushed many initiatives into law, it was ultimately not be enough to pull our country fully out of our economic depression. It will not be until World War II that American is able to provide jobs and a steady economy for many families. Historians continue to examine how the Great Depression affected Americans in the 1930s. What makes the Great Depression so devastating is that it affects many middle-class American families, families that had never before faced extreme poverty or lack of resources. Imagine if you were someone that was used to earning more than $100,000 a year and then lose everything. Then imagine that same person having to work a minimum wage job (if they could get hired since there were no jobs). Imagine how the shift in lifestyle and emotional toll might impact a family. Section A: What are some of the initiatives you learned about in the American Yawp textbook? How does FDR attempt to bring the country back? Can you see how Hoover and his Administration failed to help the American people? Section B: After reading some of the letters in "My Day" by Eleanor Roosevelt, what did you learn from her writings? What is your impression of Eleanor? Section C: After watching the video on The Great Depression, what are your impressions of the 1930's? Why do farmers seem to suffer more than other Americans during this time period? What choice would you have made if faced with the same economic loss including the inability to find work, pay the mortgage on your farm, or even feed your family? How do the 1930's forever change America's views on wealth and success in this country? Share what 2-3 things that you reacted to in the video. Section A
A close reading of the chapter discloses how Roosevelt and his administr
ation took immediate actions to reduce the impacts of Great Depression over the common Americans. During his tenure as president, the first attempt that he did was related to stabilize the economy in the form of supporting banking services in nation. Some of the banks, listed as credible ones, received quick reliefs in the form of subsidies released in their favor by government. The regulation of Emergency Banking Act was also pushed swiftly through his efforts, supported by Congress. This not only gave people hope that the things will turn out to be good in the coming years, but also it helped in saving the banking system from collapsing.
Secondly, what makes Roosevelt a national hero is his skills to coordinate with Congress in the best manner possible. He took visionary steps to create employment for people in nation and got support from Congress. His initiatives were not limited to documents only; instead, his administration was well...
