This article focuses on the criminal justice system and ageing offenders. It states that the elderly are progressively becoming part of the criminal justice system. A considerable percentage of elderly offenders are receiving life terms as a result of their aggressive criminal activities. Long mandatory sentences, the drug war, and the removal of parole in certain areas are just a few of the causes contributing to the rise in long-term incarceration. Presently, this is evident that certain states have longer sentence legislation than others. According to the evidence, cops are called to small offences committed by elderly people, mostly on the grounds of their innocuousness and need for security (Brands & van Wilsem, 2019).
According to one study, older criminals have been less prone than younger criminals to being discharged by the police. According to another study, the type of offence committed by the elderly person may have a greater impact on police leniency than age.It is highly hard to determine any universal policy owing to the intricacy of the offences perpetrated and the various features of the perpetrators.
