Introduction
This is a descriptive paper that focuses on the concept of scientific and strategic
management. It aims to explain the major similarities and differ
ences between the two terms.
The linkages between the two are explored. It has been explained how strategic management
has derived its existence from scientific management principles.
Concepts defined
The concept of management has passed through multiple evolutionary phases where
inputs have been provided by multiple scholars and researchers. The classical school of
management was characterised by scientific management theory propounded by F W Taylor.
After deep researches, experiments, behavioural studies and advancements, the contemporary
management has evolved as strategic management. Scientific management yields a rational
and scientific approach of doing tasks by focusing on efficiency and effectiveness instead of
following trial and error methods (Taylor, 1911). Strategic management on the other hand in
a comprehensive process of planning analysing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and
correcting the various inter-related components that help an organisation to achieve its
strategic mission and objectives (Hart & Stuart, 1992).
Similarities
Both approaches to management are concerned with the optimal utilisation of
resources while deriving maximum productivity. It is critical to apply rationality while
making decisions in both the approaches. The managers tend to believe less on rule of thumb
or gut feelings. They adopt defined policies and standard operating procedures as guidelines
